Blunt talk, I tried to send out a mass email last Sat and we ran into "issues" with doing so..
I tried and tried but something with the new forum software wasn't playing well with me.
Got Charles involved and he had issues also.
I'm stuck for a solution but the hell with it

Already running full bore and new system won't be done till December but lets have at it. Maybe try and get a few other family computers involved.

I've done one server install for a headless machine and two desktop installs to update the kids' desktops. Everything else was already pretty up to date.

I got it back up. In the end it was a simple fix, but it took mee a very long time to figure out.

Swapped memory and the hdd for ssd. Linux kept locking up during install or not even getting as far where I was able to start installing. Tried many different versions. Even Gparted locked up every time I tried to make a partition.
Lost two Win7 installs in the prosess, but who needs those on a cruncher.

In the end it was as simple as loading the BOIS default and starting over. Cruncher is back up on Mint 13 and it kept the same host id as it had before on Ubuntu.

Remember folks, it takes a couple of days for machines to hit their max scoring potential, so if you want to hit the ground running on day one you might consider taking your machines out of "maintenance mode" (ie turn them on) now.

Just out of curiousity, has anyone tried crunching in a Virtual Machine or Machine(s)?

The reason I ask is that I got another 8Gb of RAM for one of my rigs recently, so I've got enough(16Gb DDR2 667Mhz ECC FB RAM) for at least one VM if its feasible and worth the effort.

My opinion is that your overall performance will suffer, since you still only have fixed processor resources and WCG tasks are processor bound for the most part. Some folk set up RAM drives for crunching, which I believe does improve performance, especially if you use mechanical hard drives and are running multiple CEP2 units.

So can you setup the RAMdisk/drive to run separately from the other cores in the system, essentially adding X CEP2 WU's to 2-N cores?

Cores are parts of the CPU.

RAM Drives are virtual hard drives that exist in RAM. The advantage is much higher IO speed than a physical hard disk drive and they don't wear out from the high IO activity of CEP2 work units like early Solid State Drives were reported to do. The disadvantage is needing large amounts of RAM so you can dedicate enough to create a usable sized RAM Drive.

For those who are willing to go through a little bit of setup, Windows Azure does have a 30day, 200$ trial, all it takes (along with normal registration stuff) is a phone number and a credit card number (Will not be billed) to verify you're not a bot. It takes a couple of hours for your account to get set up, but after everything is working you can spin up a few VMs and install BOINC on them. (Not sure how long the 200$ credit will last running large VMs though)

I was getting about 3400ppd on a Xeon W3520 MacPro before I set up a dual boot HD and started using Linux.
