Would you not want to be into a product line that will sell into the hundred million units? EVERYBODY would want to... but the fact is that NVIDIA couldn't simply because they lack the x86 license required to qualify. For AMD this is a huge success, a HUGE one.
We shall see about that. Everyone thought the same about the xbox360 deal, where they made less than a single quarter's earnings over the entire lifespan of the console.

What people forget is, AMD isn't producing the chips. They merely designed them. It's handed off to a foundry from there. If they still had their own fabs, it'd be a completely different story. That's the key factor here.

^^ I for one don't see this move as a cash cow, but more as a hopeful wish that soon we'll see a unified architecture for the conventional console market.

If AMD works with developers closely, which they are now, it might prove to yield sustainable profits in the long run.

if you compare AMD's move here to what ARM is doing in the RISC segment, they've grown immensely as a company, and they CPU designs are breaking into new markers such as server.

Sometimes the best strategy is knowing how to position yourself in the market, only time will tell if AMD's strategy will pay off.

AMD is far more likely to go bankrupt than to pull off some huge coup against Intel's who has like 80%+ market share, while simultaneously removing nVidia's massive 62% vs 36% discrete gpu marketshare lead.

Agree with everything you said. Consoles is more for small steady revenue, than big cash. Its better to use to console market to indirectly benefit them by furthering developer relations. AMD's margins decreased 4 percent in a single quarter this quarter and this was the first time console revenue was included, plus the stock was hit hard after the 3 quarter numbers were release(13% in a day).

One thing I think those is AMD can't just try to create IP and standards like Mantle, or HSA and expect to make big money off of it. They need to make products that speak for themselves using the technology.

ARM for how influential their products are isn't that rich of a company. ARm holdings net profit last year was 160 million british pounds. Sure its a good amount of money, but for how ubiquitous their products are you would expect it to be more.

Compare this to qualcomm who made 6.1 billion net profit and you will see what I am getting at. You can't just make that much money off of standards and Ip, you need to sell products along with those standards to make serious money.

But AMD needs to make good products

I don't thing there is nothing to see. Sure AMD will make little money off of it, BUT:

    A) They WILL make money. In the situation they are, every penny helps.
    B) They will improve their relationships with a ton of studios.
    C) They will improve their brand image.

What is not to like? This situation is a win-win-win for AMD. Sure, they might not make a ton of money, but every little helps, and they have a ton to gain on other areas.

    ^^ correct!

sound business leaders are always looking at long term benefits and results.

on a macro nation-sized scale, the PRC (Chinese) are masters at the art of long term planning where short term planning is usually 25 years and long term planing can be anything from 100 years forward.

the capitalist business model from the western is always looking at short and medium term profits.
