So how long does CLU last? Is CLU the easiest to clean off the die. I'm ready to delid and want the longest-lasting, safest, cleanest option. Even if I give up a degree or two.

Isn't this a safer and quicker way to remove Haswell IHS ? (no hammering, no scalping, no need for special hardware, just a hairdryer and vise)

tool_462, do you just try to stay on the IHS-side of the black adhesive when you're blading the IHS off? Making sure as best as possible to never let the razor's edge touch the PCB?

Yeah just put a slight bend in the blade with your fingers as you cut, if I ever think of it maybe I'll record a video (heads up, will be with a cell phone) and put it up. I just did one now and took maybe 30 seconds. Some chips are easier than others, seems there is variance in the thickness of the black sealant stuff when it comes from Intel and I think that plays a role in some chips responding better to delidding than others.

I ran HyperPi32M before delidding then I used my vice, a small block of finished oak and a hammer to delid my 4770K in 15 seconds with zero damage. Cleaned all the old gunk off, put super glue on row next to die, installed Liquid Pro and some adhesive. Here's the before and after.

I'vv delidded around 40 CPUs with Hammer & Vice by now without any casualties. Before that I delidded around 10 CPUs with the Razorblade and I made a mistake with one CPU and hat some small cuts in the PCB (thank god the CPU was still alive though).
Regarding these numbers I would say the Hammer & Vice method is really save and easy.
On Average the temps improve from 15-20?C.

My idle temps are a few degrees lower but its the load temps that are holding at much lower temps.
Needed to bump vcore up from 1.287v to 1.328v in bios for Prime95 stability at 4600Mhz. I was also able to pass HyperPi32M 4700Mhz and 4800Mhz and get into windows at 4900Mhz and 5000Mhz which I wasnt able to do before deliding.

All I did to remove the IHS on mine was leave it inside a car parked in the sun. Left it in there for half a day, when I took it out, off the back seat, the IHS was very hot (can not physically touch it with my fingers) and placed it in the Vice, it just peeled off the pcb like nothing.
Always use what's available and besides I always hated hairdryers with their ugly noise.

I've used the razer method on my 3570k and the hammer and vise method on my 3770k. The hammer and vise seemed much safer. Still scared the crap out of me since I had to whack the cpu way harder than I would have figured.
Still the hammer and vise method is very popular and I haven't heard of any deaths using that method unlike the razer.
This method looks like a pretty good idea.

I just toasted my 4770K. I have no idea what happened. Used the hairdryer method. Was extremely careful. Machine powered on at first with the CPU light on solid and no display.
I then took it out, reapplied my TIM, checked everything over, stuck it back in, powered it up and it just shuts down immediately. Pretty much dead.
This really sucks - that thing OC'd to 4.6 on 1.25V solid.. Freakin intel garbage TIM. If they would've just soldered these things like they were supposed to, we wouldn't have to resort to stupid
like this. ARGH. Pretty sure I'm not going to be able to find another 4770K like the one I just ruined.

Hairdryer method? Heat and twist it off or what?
I would pull the chip apart again and just triple check, also make sure no bent pins in the socket.

I would not have thought that small chip caused the death as its just in the thick silicon layer rather than the thin layer of transistors etc underneath that do the work. This sort of thing used to happen all the time with the old AMD Athlon XP CPU's & they all worked fine.
I'm sure this is going to open a can of worms but imo the death was most likely caused by the flexing/bending of the pcb in the vice. Every man to his own & all that but watching the hairdryer method made me cringe as I seen the PCB bend!!

It could've been the bending... although, I was watching pretty close from the side and I had the adhesive pretty well melted so there wouldn't be any bending. That said, might want to stick to the hammer/vise method or razor blade or whatever.
