    All WU's where spaced out but the last four on each GPU but when I saw the times come up on the first 90 or so WU's there was no doubt in my mind that this was slower.

    Will test more tho, as you said this is fun when you don't need to stop and start Boinc to do the changes

    You can always give them to me. I'm not afraid of Odin or Thor. They're just myths.

    Oh, yea. About that "instant ugly", sorry about that. OC made me do it.

    The 7850 will replace my 5870 in this machine and the 5870 will replace the EVGA 460GTX in my 2600K machine so it should be a good bump all around

    What version of BOINC and how many work units should I be running? I have Q6700 / 7950. One computer has 4GB RAM and the other has 8GB. I'm currently running 7.0.52 and 16 work units.

    I really would suggest that 7.0.58 makes life a bit easier if you are deciding how many to run as you don't have to start and stop Boinc every time you make a change.

    Probably start with 16 on that setup but if you are interested in seeing what changes gradually increment 4 at a time. completion times seem to stay within a narrow band for me all the way to 44 so far with the major advantage being both in runtime and a fairly stable offset.

Half a core is plenty
    I now have the NVIDIA GPUs set to 0.5C + 0.5NV. If I reduce the numbers any more, I get errors.
    I now have the ATI GPUs set to 0.2C + 0.1ATI. Again, anything lower and I get errors.

    I still can't get my second ATI working with LINUX, so I've ordered a copy of Win7. Hopefully, that should fix the problem. I even switched the two ATIs around in case the second one might be bad, but the second (now first) ATI is functioning just find so it's the programming or the software configuration.

    I should be getting the Win7 order in today, so I'll keep you posted as to if it fixed the multi-ATI GPU issue.

    P.S. - How do you post a Thanks in this Forum?

    Once you have accumulated 100 posts; a "Thanks" icon will start being displayed in the bottom left and corner of each post. You then simply click on it for the post you wish to acknowledge...

    OldChap - in the event the WCG no longer makes use of GPU tasking, is there not a worthy client that I could redirect the GPUs to?

    100 posts? Now is when I'm getting all the valuable help in setting my units up. By the time I reach 100 posts, I'll be almost as smart as you guys.

    Of course there is !!

    Even Folding @ Home has made the move to open-cl (currently in beta I think) and I am sure there must be others doing worthwhile work.

    In the event at WCG does drop GPU tasking, I'll get back to you then to work out where the work should go. I'll keep the CPU tasking where it is for personal reasons, but I understand that we can route the workload to different Projects for example WCG for CPU work and Folding for GPU work. Right?

    FYI - I installed Win7 on my LINUX holdout and sure enough the second 7770 came on line without any fudging needed.
    It's the Magic, I tell you.

    Edit: I even got a bonus out of this. I didn't realize the Wallpaper would look so good with an ATI GPU. I like it.

    Can some brave soul point me to the right file to use with 12 GPU work units for a AMD 7850 and will also use the remaining 20 threads for cpu?
    I'm still back in the app_info.txt age and so where does this new config stuff go?

    MM, you might have covered this before, but have you downloaded/installed the 7.0.56 version of BOINC and are you using Win7?

    I would start by getting Boinc 7.0.58 (or 59 I see now)

    Then I would start running with this which will use 12 cpu cores to run 12 gpu wu's. It replaces the app_info file which needs to get removed/renamed/deleted

    <app_config>
    <app>
    <name>hcc1</name>

    <gpu_versions>
    <gpu_usage>0.08333333</gpu_usage>
    <cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
    </gpu_versions>
    </app>

    </app_config>

    Once this has settled down I would then try changing the <cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage> to <cpu_usage>0.5</cpu_usage> to observe the difference in the number of completed wu's in a day.

    If you upgrade Boinc first then making that change is just a matter of changing the app_config file details and saving again then in manager>advanced> read config file.

    ....and yep start this beastie off with some separation between wu's even if it is only 40 seconds per

    I've noticed that the Pre-Release is now up to version 7.0.60. How important is it to keep up with the latest and greatest upgrades? And, do we uninstall the currently installed version first or just install the new version on top of the old one (old one being 7.0.58)?

    Thanks

    You have to read the new version release notes and see if it offers something worth-wild to update application.

    for Example 7.0.42 + allows to crunch with 7XXX AMD cards and V7.0.56 + allows the update your chosen BOINC preferences without having to re-start BOINC. The old saying: "Do not fix it if it ain't broken still very much applies here"

    To update BOINC version you first exit BOINC and then uninstall old version while keeping data files. You then simply install the new BOINC version and then re-start the application.

    I personally like to re-start my system after uninstalling the old BOINC version prior to installing new version. I just want to insure that the uninstall has registered. (I do this for all application updates requiring a prior manual uninstall of older version.

    Sound advise, as usual, from the fly boy. If I had the ability, I'd give you a Thank You to jeanguy2 For This Useful Post.

    Dumb question: jeanguy2, could/would you please provide a link to the "new version release notes" area? That will provide a logical completion to this issue.

    Edit: As to the if it ain't broke, I get an occasional calculation error. How do I know if it was cause by my current revision or not? The errors are not occurring often enough to justify modifying the app_config file.

    Changelog for 7.0.60 is here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_...8&postid=48480
    In that thread all releases are published including Alpha builds.

    I don't think that occasional calculation errors are caused by BOINC. It's rather the project app, or more likely:
    - GPU Driver quality/stability
    - System quality/stability
    - OCing (not by OC )
    - Running too many WUs per GPU
    - Quantum fluctuations

    Btw, I don't uninstall old versions before upgrade. Just install the new one over the old and so far no issues with that...
