^ The logical extreme there being a single desktop that has every icon from everything on it. That would be equally silly. Some degree of categorization is useful. Many like the concept of a start menu as a place to start certain classes of tasks with the option to also access frequently used stuff without extra clicks by using shortcuts, myself included.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

Yup! I use rocketdock for things I use daily, the rest are usually there right after clicking the start button.

I'm still struggling to understand why people have a problem with the start screen, or whatever it's called, the one with Metro.

To me it just seems like a bigger start menu with apps added. So if one wants to use Metro apps it's great. If one doesn't one doesn't have to. It's just that easy. And to launch a desktop app one just launch it from the new start page rather than from the start menu. I just don't see the big difference.....
Win XP Pro x64 / Win 7 x64 / Phenom II / Asus m3a79-t Deluxe / 8x2 GB GSkill and some other stuff.....

It's so archaic that Firefox changed its traditional File+Edit+etc. for a single menu. Go figure.

Oh, and you can go back to the usual buttons easily. No damage done and everyone is happy.

Rumor is that in the final version you wont be able to go back to the usual buttons.

This goal suggested that Microsoft would let businesses configure Windows 8 in such a way that users could boot directly to the desktop and skip the Metro-style Start Screen. But the software giant has had a change of heart, and my sources at Microsoft tell me it’s been busy ripping out legacy code for the old Start button and Start Menu so that developers won’t be able to write utilities that bring those features back. And boot to the desktop? Forget about it.

Damn it takes long to navigate into shutdown, reset etc. menu, first need get from desktop to metro and then from there to sidemenu that you need wait 2-3 seconds to open once you put mouse to right corner.
Microsoft failed yet again. Ofc people can use Control+Alt+Delete but some peoples dont even know that key combo.

If microsoft removes startmenu functionality completly from windows 8, i will completly remake startmenu again with c++ to appear just like it used to be before.

Alt F4 works, and you can do this.

Too bad there isn't a power button on Start out of the box tho.

You can go straight to that side menu via mouse or touch on the right hand side.

Side Menu -> Settings -> Shut Down.

One click more then traditional shutting down. You can also press Windows + I to get that side menu and then its straight to Shut Down from there.

Just because the drivers are certified does not mean they can't cause lockups. How many bad drivers have been made that were WHQL but still had some serious issues?

I think its about the Intel NIC, SoundCard, SandyBridge CPU or nVidia Card.

My two other test machines does not have any lockups, they use i7 875k or phenom 2 1100t, Realtek Nic, Realtek Onboard Sound, AMD Radeon HD7970 or HD6950 and Corsair Force GT 120 SSD

Id like to hear what NIC, Sound, CPU and GPU combo everyone uses and report if they have lockups, just because some people say its GPU problem and some say its Windows 8 ethernet drivers or then like andressergio said it could be audio drivers also.

    Edit :
Found some more possible causes, they think its C-State problem affecting only Intel CPU's and certain chipsets .
