Classic Shell works with RP. You can add and customize Start menu, add and customize Start button, use the Windows key for the Start button..
I have the Start menu in the upper left corner (since I have the taskbar in the top), and the Lego screen in the lower left.

Yeah, 3rd party software shouldn't be necessary, but that's the way it is..

You can create a local account like before. MA is only needed for Store access. Also if you have a decade worth of spam why not just delete all?

Anyone know if Picture Login works with Domains?

Haven't had a chance to muck around with that feature yet.

Windows 8 have a start menu, is called Metro UI. Don't believe me; Metro UI, right click, show all apps, ,if you still think windows 8 don't have a start menu, maybe computers are not for you.

Funny thing is you don't even need shortcuts, metro allows you to type on it… you login into windows, you got metro in front of you, just type dos and boom, dosbox one click away, you type panel, boom control panel one click away, you type word, and Microsoft word is one click away, etc…

    Third party start menus? Facepalm.

I installed window 8 dual boot with Windows 7 in a Asus K53U that was so cheap i had to buy it , and now the dual boot is gone, win7 partition deleted.

Win 8 is snappier, all drivers were installed with success, all apps either, even the not so mainstream ones like cloudfogger for example, everything is more accessible, ribbon in the explorer is a plus, being able to disable startup items in task manager another, Remote desktop is a little faster, dual monitors… well it’s cool having metro in one monitor and the desktop on another, but you then need to use the bar on the bottom in metro to pan left or right, i could go on.

Metro apps are interesting, if you don't want to be bothered with a array of options, or you don't need the extra features. Even that crap called IE look nice as a metro app.

The moment Microsoft releases the final stable version, it’s going to the main PC’s. That’s the only bad thing i have to report, it crashed on me for no apparent reason 4,5 times already, well, one i was installing comodo, but for example another one i was just using word.

I don't see why windows 8 would be a problem for servers either.

I know most people don't like changes, but come on.

    And third party start menus?

I'm still to busy to install this ver of win8, been playing with gasification and bio-char... (success ).
    Anyways...

I had no crashes myself, just a few small bugs, for the most part avoidable.
The nvidia driver should be stable btw, as stable as the win7 drivers, the are essentially the same anyways except for the later rev's that are win8 specific for now, supporting wddm v1.2.
You don't HAVE to use a wddm v1.2 driver in win8 if you have a fav win7 driver for example...

Last time I knew, the metro ui looked ok'ish, but the metro apps themselves looked like, um well, 3 color gui's, apple lisa?

    ...
Thinking about burning a bunch of win8 disks and throwing them at people or something for fun...

I chucked a 8500GT on mine and it does also do funny stuff, BSOD, could be a driver related issue.

If metro where optional Id be okay with that but as it stands i feel there is to much of a disconnect between it and the traditional desktop. It just doesnt feel natural on a non touch screen device. I have no doubts it will be great on a tablet but last time i checked most windows users didnt invest in a computer to use a tablet interface... The underlying improvements of 8 are nice but as it stands im giving metro a thumbs down.

I am using this for a few day's and well Metro its ugly...
I am have found out that I try to avoid using it... Using shortcuts, pin stuf on the taskbar and such.
There are good things about this OS. Like the renewed copy, taskmanager. But metro is being forced up our throat and this is something I do not like...
It feels like this should not be used on a Laptop, Desktop, Ultrabook... You can use it on a phone, tablet...

But this is going to be a pain when normal users are going to get this on their brand new laptop, pc.... And I don't even want to test this out on a Domain network...
proud to be from Belguim ^^

i agree that metro is weird and sort of no need for a desktop OS but UI IQ is better and faster than W7 i tried for days and on my Crossover 27 2560x1440 i can really see the dif, its a pity that lockups drove me nuts

    cheers !

I tried latest 296 and 301, bowth give lockups and 296's were for W8 and 301 were for W7 but work pretty good on W8, only this damn lockup problem makes me stay away of W8.
I read from other forums that it could be Network Bug triggered by Chrome and some other programs, they say that lockups no more appeared when they used some other browser than Chrome.

I read from other forums that it could be Network Bug triggered by Chrome and some other programs, they say that lockups no more appeared when they used some other browser than Chrome.
its possible but IE10 is crap for BF3 web updates...im trying 302.71 for W7 and W8 will report back

I know most people don't like changes, but come on.
Just wait until you try something even better called windows 7, you can just click an icon without having to type it in first!

And not only that windows 7 is faster, and much more stable!

Although if you are one of those that doesnt like change (even if more efficienct) you can go to windows 7 start menu and type the program and boom, there it is. So windows 7 still gives you that choice if you feel you need to waste time typing!

And if you dont like that clunky huge start menu with 2 inch by 2 inch icons in that older windows 8 metro that was designed for tablets, when you upgrade to windows 7 all those clunky large buttons for touch screen are condensed into one button on left, ie much cleaner interface on 7, it is an OS actually designed for a desktop. And all those windows live sign in requirements, microsoft advertisement apps, are gone on 7.

And best of all, no random crashes.

Once you try windows 7, you wont want to go back to 8.

Only confusing thing is why microsoft is numbering their OS's counting backwards but eh.

You can hold out on Windows 7 for the next 10 years or until they kill off updates, or you can learn how to customize and make the interface more intuitive for your purposes. The one nice thing is that Microsoft appears to be making the interface relatively maleable in that sense. I understand not liking the defaults on something like this, but it's going to become the norm pretty quick. It's different, foreign, yet not unusable. Given time, you might actually find it faster.

All these work arounds to get the Start button back or to disable Metro will be killed by MS in the final version of Win8 it seems.
Seems they rly want to force Metro on us.

I myself do not like Metro and i dont understand why they want to force it on us so much. I can see that it probably works grt on a touch device but why force it on us on desktop devices?
    Just make it optional.
