I use Start for things like MicroSoft Office (and others), to many things to pin to the task bar so if I need something I do not use very often I just drill through the Start Button list.

But often I use a folder on my desktop called... I know wait for it... Short Cuts LOL. I dump a lot of ones I hardly use there. Keeps my desktop clean I guess.
