You're forgetting that not all of us are gamers though. For instance, I'm double majoring in biomedical and electrical engineering (Umich) and having a large screen makes a big difference when it comes to programming and circuit design. It's really helpful to have that extra space so that you can be running matlab, writing code and even browsing the web at the same time without having to minimize any windows.
Arguably it would make sense to just get a multiple monitor display setup at that point, but I agree with Diltech that I hate the additional bezels. Stretching an excel spreadsheet over 2 monitors looks hideous compared to one massive one imo.
