    Haswell's GPU secret is Crystalwell

When we wrote that Haswell was a graphics monster a few months ago, we mentioned there was more to the story than that. What we couldn’t tell you about at the time, SemiAccurate values the fingers of their moles more than a headline, was a technology called Crystalwell (or possibly Crystal Well).

Crystalwell is not L4 cache on package as many have been surmising, it is more GPU memory on an interposer...

We are told the GT3 variants of Haswell will have 64MB of on-package memory connected through an ultra-wide bus.

Pretty interested to see how real world performance is affected by this and if haswell's gpu performance is actually decent and not just hoopla.

For a second I actually thought it was still April 1st after reading that knee slapper! Charlie is without question one of the least credible tech "journalists" in existence.

actually awhile back charlie reported they scrapped LRB (and all its derivites) from haswell and any future cpu (for right now). Let me look for the article..But the GPU is just a super beefed up vers of whatever they've used for SB ( and in turn IVY).

He explained it in a recent article Ivy's GPU just has more of SB's EU 'shaders' and each shader is an ehanced version of SB's shader...So its a 2x increase with Ivy..And then haswell does that again but has up to 40 shaders, 5X performance...so basically brute force, better process and some cool new tricks...but def not Larrabee :/

    Found it!

A year after that is Haswell, a new architecture on the same 22nm process as Ivy. Haswell is where Intel starts getting serious about die stacking, interposers, and related advanced packaging technologies...

We had originally stated that it was going to use Larrabee graphics on die, but that plan was pulled when Larrabee dumped the ISA of LRB1 and LRB2 for the new LRB3/Knights Corner ISA...

    You know it!

I wonder if he has lost any more bets with Intel's CEO and CTO.

i quite like his "journalism", it's like cable news and has some suspense and bias, but unlike modern journalism he still covers all stories and has good information most of the time even if it goes against his normal bias. i cannot think of any other site that out pre NDA and leaked info as accurately. and his anti-nvidia bias comes from nvidia messing with him and banning him for what amounts to real journalism before he had a bias, so its not like he started it.

If you'd like to see how wrong Charlie actually has been over much of the past decade you can run a search for posts i've made in the past which completely invalidate any claim that Charlie has been accurate in his reporting.

I especially got a kick out of all the AMD fans praising his accuracy regarding HD5xxx release, yet the facts showed he had made over a half dozen claims in various articles which were all over the place in terms of specs and performance. Doing so makes it quite easy for him to then cherry pick the closest prediction and claim he knew all along.

What he does is exactly like betting on 75% of the numbers when playing Roulette.

As for nVidia blacklisting him, that was a very long time in the making. Long before the mess about 3 years ago, Charlie spent the previous half decade continually leaking information (many times inaccurate), and pretty much doing everything he could to destroy any shred of goodwill there was between him and nVidia.

A responsible journalist would have never allowed himself to publicly show himself as a complete fanboy driven by bias.

So this is sorta like Charlie's version of the "PhysX Core" that was supposed to be included with Kepler, right?

Knights Corner and Knights Ferry are very different products from what's being integrated into HSW.

How can one possibly praise 'journalism' that is obviously biased and more often than not wrong?

Would love to see you two get into the field and see how "good" you are at it.
Charlie is the best at what he does. Yes, he isn't perfect but that's not possible in his profession.

I'm sorry but Charlie is the Fox News of tech journalism. He spews out hatred for nvidia article after article, how often do you see hate articles on the BBC or Reuters?

I personally like charlie because I feel that stuff he reports is unique and often times way ahead of anyone else. He makes the industry seem more exciting and entertaining. Especially when he writes longer articles and talks about aspects of the industry that only people in his position see. I really enjoy reading his stuff, even if he is wrong, most likely he's right in some regard.

The industry has become rather bland and boring with product launches and what not. I think its fun to read about stuff years in advance..Like when he posted a scan of a napkin with a sketch of the Romley platform like 3-4 years ago..He went out with some intel fellows, got drunk in a pub and got this info..That's awesome if you ask me..ANd the drawing was 99% accurate...The stuff that wasn't accurate was due to Intel changing its plans ever so slightly over the years..

I know I'm in the minority but I've been reading CHarlie for years and I look forward to reading the "juicey" articles he provides. He always brings something to the table that no one else has in terms of story, rumors and information.

How many other sites are reporting about Intel taking on a foundry customer? etc

Just because he has a different perspective means he is wrong? Same as Fox News?
I see hate, slander and prejudice all over the media. The media has their own political bias and distorts the news/information to benefit their political agenda.

With any sort of article or piece of information you have to throw a bunch of it out and dissect it piece by piece. For a lot of people that is hard to do.
Doesn't matter if it is world, local, tech, political or sports. Everyone has their own bias and that is what makes us such unique individuals.
