I'd rather have those Merom cpu's which should work in the Intel board.

Well, yeah ... but I think I've got about as much chance of finding those as pooping butterflies and unicorns.

So about 4-5 weeks ago I was browsing the For Sale section @ OCAU.. a title read: "intel server gear blahblah". So I clicked.. lo & behold! A fellow from Queensland (the East side of Oz - where all the floods happened), had dropped a pretty penny by purchasing *brand new/never used* TYAN sossaman motherboard! The gentlemen was very friendly.. he told me he had bought the mobo & was already 'over it' - disinterested in continuing with the build & this is before the mobo had even gotten to him!!! He had bought the mobo from a seller on Ebay in USA. So.. no it was not as cheap as an Intel sossy mobo.. but lets just say it was a darn good price given the rarity & the fact it was brand new

    pics:

RAM & heatsinks (hopefully the correct ones ) are on the way.. first role for this rig is file server & crunching.. the later it'll be crunching & it'll also be used for security video surveillance (thank u 2x PCIEx8 )
will post pics when all built etc

thats the other thing I forgot to mention: if you mentioned that you wanted to buy some, please do! the reason being, in my messages to belmonttech, I said there were others wanting to buy - if none buy I look like a liar & utter tool!

I've been tempted to build another to replace the one that I no longer have. $8 a month to run at my electric rates. Only thing would be finding heatsinks, those are hard to come by now. But, I might be able to rig something else up, a DIY sort of deal.

in regards to that - i was thinking i might use some of the socket 604 copper heatsinks (i know they do not fit out of the box) and snapping the mounting legs off then making some new legs out of a threaded bar and some nuts

If ANYBODY knows of how one might fashion alternative heatsinks I need to know. intel is fresh out of abbheatsinks part, and I need 2 more.

Maybe I can borrow one of the sinks from my brother, make some measurements, and come up with mod instructions for the standard socket 604 sinks to make them work with the Sossamans.

I'm sure there is a way to make something else work

604 heat sinks should work if you can get the mounting height issue sorted. Just need to get some detailed measurements, which I forgot to take last time I assembled one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the only real difference is the Sossaman sinks have an extra "step" in them to take up the space of what normally would be an IHS on the standard chips, while the standard sinks don't have that step. So the standard 604 sinks won't make contact with the sossaman CPU.

So what if you were to remove the built-in spring loaded screws on a standard 604 sink, and trim the standoffs to reduce their length so they work with the sossaman, and either put the springy screws back or just use standard screws for a hardmount? Or heck, instead of measuring and cutting the standoffs to specific length, just lop them off entirely and carefully hardmount with other screws so you don't get too much pressure on the core? Seems that would be the easiest.

From what I understand the sossaman die is more fragile than the die on the old AMD 939 chips - I had a delidded Opteron 165 that I would mercilessly crank down the heatsink onto without one issue but I was warned that the sossaman is pretty touchy about too much mounting pressure.

well I have mounted none standard HS's on sammys before.. it aint that hard or anything. As for the fragility of the core(s) - dont be too scared / put-off: Before the core(s) actually break, the rig will freeze & yes I know this from experience! it went something like this: rig is running completely fine, in W7... tighten one of the screws too far & voila! complete freeze - no mouse move, nothing. So I would then turn it of, loosen the screw(s), turn on, all fine again
The rig I did this 'testing' on is still running fine today - its that one I gave away to my best friend as a wedding gift.

IMHO, the biggest 'barrier' so-to-speak, isnt that step between HS & CPU, instead, it is finding a HS that has the same alignment in regards to the stand-offs / legs with the mobo holes. If I had a HS that had 'legs' that aligned with the mobo HS mounting holes, the rest would be a piece of cake

So I have a server I'm building, it's pretty much exactly perfect. I'm using intel heatsinks (with the legs removed because they don't work with theboard without a backplate), SL8WT chips (which is what board calls for) and some hynix RAM that is letter for letter on the compatibility list.

The board doesn't boot. All the lights are amber (showing green and red).

I'm not sure what to do other than tear it down and rebuild it.

The exact order of the lights and their colours is an error code.

I've got all the documentation in a zip file you can download HERE
