Hey NKRader simple question for you how did u get both pcs to run off the same pc? I have the cables to get the power distributed but how do you turn them both on at the same time?

I couldnt get both sammies to run like you have it.

    I did this once too.

You have to hit the power button on each one to turn both on. Yes, when the PSU turns on by turning on one of the Sossamans it will turn on the fans of the other, but it won't actually start up until you hit the power switch of the second one.

Also, turning off one won't turn off the other or the power supply. Only after the second one powers off will the power supply then shut off.

and to add to that. i have em setup in bios to power up as soon as they get power. so i dont have to just flick the switch on backside of psu. and they both start at the same time

Is it possible to use a Sammy CPU in a single-socket board such as this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT?

Man, this is so confusing - Socket 478, socket 479, socket M, Socket P, Xeon (Sammy) PPGA478... aaargh!

no. if i remember right it only only only works with the intel board. or that rare supermicro board.

i want to say its not a "true" s479.

    just buy the full atx..

Thanks. I was more wanting to get the board and asking about the CPUs, than wanting a Sammy and asking about the board. Thinking of building me a Hackintosh...

Intel board + Sammys is tempting but means spending lots on a case...

or hacking up a regular case to make room. I have three here in normal ATx cases that have been ... massaged internally (with tin snips) to make room.

I chopped the 3.5" bays and part of the lowest 5.25" bay out of an old Antec case to fit a Sossaman in when I went to having just one instead of two.

when you buy the heatsinks, do you get the backplate? if not, where is a good place to get them? also, i noticed in the manual there is a little mechanism (spring maybe?) that goes between the backplate and motherboard.

so backplate -> mechanism -> motherboard -> heatsinks.

all you have to get is

    Backplate/Mobo/CPU/Heatsink
everything else is included with the others.

    gotta buy the backplate.

    Hi,

I'm kind of new to this, but I think I'd like to try building one of these rigs. I still need to read through more of this thread, but I wanted to ask a couple of questions first so I wouldn't get my hopes up unnecessarily. :P

    1) Is building one of these a reasonable project for someone who isn't scared about poking around inside a case or installing an OS, but hasn't gone through the whole motions of building a full system? From the sounds of things, it looks like I'd have fun doing this build and not spend a lot of money at the same time! (Also, it would give me some practice in system building before I go ahead and build my new desktop next spring after I receive my financial aid refund.)

    2) Are the heatsinks still available somewhere? I found the motherboard and backplate, and am willing to patiently hunt on ebay for the CPUs, but the link I see come up most often here is dead.

    3) I would need to set this up to crunch in my room at home, which only has a wireless connection (running a cable would be a pain). Would this system with some flavor of Linux support me installing a PCI wireless card or do you know of any alternatives?

Basically my plan is to grab pieces for this system as budget and supply allow, with a goal to get it finished no later than the end of winter break (but hopefully before the next SuperComputer Week!). Sound good?

    Thanks for the help!

Keep reading, the only place to reliably get heat sinks (for the Intel boards at least) is direct from Intel. The link is in the last couple of pages. The chances of finding them on eBay are remote at best. You MIGHT get lucky, but don't hold your breath. The Intel board has dual gigabit LAN connections, I don't know about the others but expect something similar. If you can they'd be better to use than wireless, but if you insist then get yourself a decent brand wireless card (Linksys etc, just not no-name stuff) and most modern Linux variants will support it pretty well. Be aware that the Intel board is E-ATx and won't readily fit in a regular case without some ... massaging ... with a drill, tin snips, Dremel etc. It can be done (I've done three) but it can also be pretty permanent for the case. One of the other boards might be regular ATx, I don't know.

I found the link for the heat sinks, thank you! I do plan on buying the Intel board from Centrix and unfortunately, yes, for now it has to be wireless as the DSL box is on a different floor and opposite side of the house from the room where I'll keep this machine. I have a Linksys card that I used in my old P4 desktop, so I should be good to go there. Thank you again!
