uhm
i'm sad
let me say what it's the problem
I have bought a gigabyte gtx460 OC 1gb, ok it works without problem but ...
My gpu can go @ 850mhz whit 1.037v very stable (OCCT) without problem, under stress test i get 74° of temp
The problem is that over 850mhz, my card will not run stable
2-3 months ago, i have test it @ 875mhz 1.05v, but after 5 min. i saw 1 error.
today i can't run stable it with 1.075v, i get error in 1 or 2 min.
What is the temp critical for this card?
Fan @ 100% always under test
I try to change thermal compound with Artic Cooling MX3 ( -2° vs stock ) but...

Take the cooler apart entirely and replace the stock TIM used on the VRMs with something good.

I tried the same settings with 1.037v, but it threw errors after 10 minutes. I'm thinking it will be possible if I drop mem speed to 2100mhz. Will post further results later ^_^
Is there a way I can unlock more voltage over the 1.087v limit?
yes just use NiBiToR to open your bios and set max (up to 1.21v)then save modded bios and flash to your card
how to guide

its rather simple

Nah I'm sure you'll be fine. Think my first Cyclone was just blessed with good OCing but a bum VRM. Second Cyclone happily does 902/4300 1.1v and has run like that for around 3 months now.

Climbing a little more ... limit to 1.087V.
950/2240MHz:
Temp máx 55ºC (Kombustor @ 60% fan speed) - Temp ambient 17ºC.
What is the maximum voltage that I can use in 24/7 without any problems? It would be 1.087V?

Kombustor is a poor test for stability. Run Unigine Heaven instead it will put the GPU and memory under extreme load.

It really shouldn't be. Just run nvidia inspector with kombustor, then run Unigine Heaven. Heaven stresses the memory and GPU far better. AFAIK, kombustor stresses GPU about 60%, practically zero stress on memory. Heaven stresses the GPU around 96% minimum, and virtually all of the memory is in use.

Yep deffinately. The 460 has a lot of muscle for such a little card. My 460 at its clocks actually outdoes a stock GTX470, and possibly a 470 with a mild OC as well. The key to remember is to consider the resolution you game at, quality of textures (ie; size, detail, etc) and how much bandwidth you realistically need to handle those tasks with minimal to no bottlenecking going on within the architecture of the card itself. Once you figure that out, you can pile everything else into the GPU for raw speed.
Taking my clocks as a example;
GPU: 902MHz
Memory: 4310MHz
Now, I game at 1680*1050, like to have 2xAA and 8xAF (4xAA doesn't give a very noticable difference IMO and there is pretty much no visual difference between 8xAF and 16xAF) and the most graphically demanding game I probably have is Crysis Warhead which I play at "Enthusiast" settings. Based on this, I can actually reduce my memory OC to 4200MHz and basically have zero FPS hit as a result which would in turn;
- Reduce heat from the memory
- Reduce strain on the IMC
- Possibly increase wiggle room for max stable GPU clock because of the reduced heat and less strain on the IMC
With all this done instead of 902 / 4310 I could end up with 930-950 / 4200 without increasing GPU voltage above its current 1.1v. Sure, I sacrifice some bandwidth but the FPS decrease from doing so won't really be noticable even at 1920 with 4xAA and 8xAF, if I had to guess, maybe 1.5-2FPS. In return though I gain 30-50MHz on the GPU which would give me around 3-5FPS more meaning even taking into account the lower memory speed, I still gain.
Thats rather a long explanation probably going into too much detail about how I consider the architecture of any component while OCing, but hopefully you understood the meaning![]()

Hi all, I have 2 Palit Sonic Platinum GTX460s and I would like to mod the bios and be able to overvolt slightly higher. I have never done this and am completely clueless on how to. Would any kind soul give me some "real time" help to flash them?I got some heatsinks that I will install on the voltage regulators as well!

Hey, in the end I managed to flash with Ket's modified bios that unlocks up to 1.2volts and all went flawlessly. I also installed heatsinks on the voltage regulators. Max I can get to stable is 880/4100 in SLI with 1.1volts...even if I give it more juice, it will crash and give a black screen when it heats up too much (cards go over 90C if I give more than 1.1volts).
I suppose that's the limit?Any tweaks you can suggest?
