Preparing to filter air inside reactors to reduce radioactivity, allowing workers to enter
Next step will be setting up a new cooling system that uses the current pipe system (which probably leaks, but they can't enter the reactors to install new pipes)

Air filters installed, will take 3 days to geht reactor1

Monju experimental fast breeder reactor was shut down after a minor accident. Was running for 1 year now after it had been shut down for 15 years after a major leak of sodium. Zu much for fast breeders being safe huh?
Safer than conventional reactors I guess... but not really safe

Japan to decomission major nuclear plant built on top of a fault line

Waterflow into reactor1 increased by 30%, filters are cleaning the air inside the reactor, the new water cooling and filtering loop has been set up and is supposedly working well. Radiation outside of reactor1 is still almost 100mSv.
If radiation drops, workers will enter as soon as this Sunday

There's supposedly an 87% chance this area will get hit by a magnitude8 quake within the next 30 years. The region gets hit every 100 years more or less and the next quake is already overdue.

Kan getting criticized by some of his own party for the plan.
Looks like they prefer to play Russian roulette with the Japanese people some more.
I wonder if it'll take a second fukushima for things in Japan to move ahead.
They still refuse to shut down or even upgrade plants that are virtually identical to fukushima... oh well, they will learn their lesson sooner or later, I just feel sorry for the people in Japan affected by the Govs slow learning curve and corporate greed :/
Emergency shutdown was triggered at a nuclear plant In Alabama, usa of the same series as the fukushima reactors after a tornado brought down the power lines of the cooling system. Had the diesel backup reactors been flooded or damaged by the rain and storm it could have run into similar problems as the plant in fukushima

Keep giving us the news saaya.
Like ah, do you know if the air filters worked out for them?
If they could get one of these reactors under control and prepared for dismantlement.
Then there's hope for the others.
Not to be a scare monger but...
What happens if we do end up having some disaster that prevents us from doing anything about a large amount of nuke plants going critical?
We just let them go?, for 20k years...
Just saying...
You're not being a scare monger... you are, however, living in a fantasy world. What on earth could trigger any amount of reactors to go critical? it's that exact thinking that will now stop the development of future power stations.
This thread has just become a nuclear bashing thread, why not bash the building materials used in the construction of any of the house's (for example) as they didn't withstand a level9 earthquake and a tsunami of epic proportions without floating off / breaking.
Good grief.

nuts i can't still believe this thread is still going, but I am glad its still on topic. I am glad they are recovering, stay strong !
Yeah, because poor building construction is something that will greatly affect the rest of mankind for many years to come. Why not make jails out of balsa wood? Not like they need to be built super strong to prevent any dangerous people from getting out. If someone chooses to buy or build a house with substandard materials, that is only going to affect them for the most part. When a nuclear power company builds or keeps using outdated systems, it greatly affects many people.
I dont want to abandon nuclear power, but I think it needs much much tighter regulation. Can not be using technology or structures from over 40 years ago.
Fusion needs to be used instead of fission.Need to decomission the fission plants over the next 20 years and throw all money and researchers into making fusion reality.

Man, how the heck do you recover from that? It's like you have to rebuild entire communities or at least need to build levies that weren't needed previously. That's nuts.
Bad idea, unless you KNOW that over the next 20 years that fusion will be reality and can replace the fission plants. Since we don't know this, what would you propose to replace all the current nuke plants with? And if you say solar or wind, well....
"Sacred geometry"? Fission illegal through the universe? What?

English is not his first language, that's obviously a translation summing up the dangers of Fission. And btw, solar and wind can generate all the energy we'd ever need a million times over, the problem is it takes investment to get there and almost no one wants to do that because they wanna get paid now.
1 word: space.
Solar and wind take way too much real estate for countries such as Japan. They don't have the luxury of space like some other countries do. They aren't the only ones with that problem either. And neither are reliable, constant sources due to cloud cover, no sunlight at night, variable winds, etc. For supplemental energy sources, yes, but to rely on consistently, no.

Call it fantasy if you want.
Looking at historical records it seems to me that it's a possibility.
Some of you guys are just to d@mned greedy.
Big freaking deal if you go without...
If you think the quakes are bad now just wait until we reach ophiuchus...
Especially if we end up getting trapped there for a cycle.
Instead of an elliptical orbit theres a cylindrical orbit then followed by a elliptical.
Which results in massive orbit speed increases during the cylindrical orbit.
Something which definitely could jump start the big polar shift that's due, the solar storm that's due, and a ton of earthquakes.
That's only if we get close enough to it though.

I think we will see another fission disaster in the next 20 years if we do not start shutting down. Unless those old plants are all going to be updated in that time. Doubtful. Chernobyl was 25 years ago. Fukishima was not built much better obviously. Problem with Fission is that you can not just turn them off. Sad part is that Fusion power will not likely be wide spread in my lifetime. Scientists seem to think 2040-2050 will be the earliest commercial fusion plants. Plenty of time for a couple more fukishimas or chernobyls first.

the main problem is they need to be slightly smarter about where they put said plants. It's kind of like some just picked the location randomly and as we can see here mother nature agreed. I mean what kind of dumbass puts a nuclear power plant on the coast in a known earthqauke/tsunami region?
I thought the same thing. Especially since it has remained unchanged over the last couple decades even when reports indicated safety concerns.
