I was also trying a similar configuration (only different is GTS250 instead of your 8800GTS's) and I think the problem is somehow related to the SLI certificate. From the post here on how to enable SLI on pre Intel X58 and non Nvidia chipsets it states that in AIDA under ACPI it should report SLI Certificate. On mine it says not found/none.

Not sure why though, the SLI patch 0.9b should (at least I understand it this way) install the patch.

Odd. Same drivers are yours. The above link also stated support for 260.xx drivers.

    Maybe we're overseeing something simple.

There is a newer version of the patch here
    See if this helps.
Remember to turn off UAC and Antirvirus when performing the Install otherwise the system files may not be overwritten.

Well, in Windows 7 with UAC turned disabled and SLI Patch 1.0 run as Administrator the patch installs fine. The problems start as soon as I physically install the 2nd GTS250 in PCI-E x16 slot #2. Windows 7 starts loading but within seconds always BSOD's with a 0x0000000A5 error code. The BSOD also states a line along the lines of "This PC's BIOS is not fully ACPI compliant...". This is on a Rampage Extreme with BIOS 1301.

Each GTS250 works fine solo so can't be a card fault I don't think.

    Strange.

Thanks for posting the link though.

'Possible' cure for random desktop freezes under SLI

    Hi All,

If, like me, you have SLI working but get random desktop freezes and Windows startup freezes, I found a solution which works consistently for me; reasoning and inferences follow after:

    1) When I switch the PC off, provided I do NOT disconnect/switch off the mains, I never ever get the desktop/startup freeze. Basically there needs to be power to the system all the time, even when off - strange

    2) Whenever I switch it on, usually the first cold boot fails to initialise both cards. Usually one will fail to start. A second (and vary rarely third) reboot always cures this for me.

After (1) and (2) I have completely seemless uninterrupted SLI gaming with no issues whatsoever. Nor does it make any difference what version of the drivers (258 - 265) or SLI patch (0.90 - 1.0) I use. I believe that there is a significant probability that, for those experiencing the same freeze/crash issues I was, that the issue is nothing to do with drivers/SLI patch problems/Windows:

After experiencing numerous crashes and freezes last year, I got fed up with rebuilds so after a clean rebuild and getting SLI running again I installed Acronis and took a drive image. The next time I had a crash, I just recovered the drive image and carried on no problem.

After awhile I stopped playing with the gaming rig so I shut it down and powered it off at the mains. Some weeks later I switched it back on and got the freeze/crash problems. Odd because the last time I shut it down it had been fine, nevertheless I just restored the disc image and got the same problem again - weird. The restore was a disc image of the working clean SLI build so there couldn't be any file corruption. So I restored again and again, each time getting the same desktop or startup freeze. After awhile I gave up and switched the whole thing off but forgot to turn off the mains. Next day I booted up and everything was fine. Ran a few rounds of Vantage, got P34595 score - everything seemed fine. Left it looping that for a few hours and still fine. Played FSX for hours and still fine... Ok so switched it off (not at the mains) and came back to it a few days later. Took a couple of reboots to get both cards to start up but still fine. Repeated the whole exercise every few days and the system seemed to be bomb proof. Then I powered off and switched off the mains. A few days later it freezes on windows start up. Reboot and the same. Reboot again and a freeze on the desktop. Recover the drive image again and it still freezes - WTF?!

The only thing which had changed was that, after the PC was shutdown, the mains were switched off. Ok, so I switched the mains back on and left it for a few days. Next power-on, and a couple of reboots to get both cards to start, it was fine again. No freezes or crashes and has stayed that way ever since provided that, when I shutdown there's still mains power and that a do a couple of warm reboots to get both cards starting happily in Win7. After that everything is fine. Ok so it's a quirky startup routine but compared to the random niggles I had with my old pair of 4870X2s in the same system - this is a dream.

It could be useful to know if this approach works for others. Only thing I would say is, "patience" if you've been powering off at the mains. It took my PC a few days to be 'happy' again after I stopped doing this.

Obviously if you don't switch off at the mains after a shutdown and you have freezes/crashes then the above is going to be useless for you.

you need to have both cards installed BEFORE you patch it.... if you remove one of them.... or change the GFX config after the patch all hell breaks loose on startup...

Okay, I see, thanks. I was applying the patch then turning the PC off to install the 2nd card. Unfortunately I sold the second card now so can't try again. If this is the only thing I was missing then great to hear. Windows didn't want to boot regardless whether I chose the F8 SLI hack or normal boot menu option.

Does the 1.0 patch still work with the latest 266.58 drivers and newer Nvidia GPU's?

I currently don't have a second card, but I installed the patch to see if getting a second for SLI was possible. It said the patch applied successfully, and rebooting to the SLI mode worked. However I do not have an SLI tab, but is that only because I do not have a second card, or did the patch not actually work?

    I have a P45 chipset and a GTX 460.

    No go with 275.50's.

But i'm testing with WinXP-64 on a 5000x chipset so it may not be helping.

    edit

    No go with 280.19's either

Do eet! Ohhh Mr FancyPants gots a "9650 Extreme to boot"! lol j/k (always wanted to try a 9550-9650)

Ya man, I'm still rockn my ole P5B-Deluxe w/6GB ram too! except with a Q6600 @3600 Mhz and for a few years previously an E6400 @3600Mhz on same MoBo.

Graphics for past 2-3 years.. a Toxic5850 + 9600GT for PhsyX (traded my GTS250 to a buddy) doh. I got my bro to do an ATI/nVidia physX mod on a 9550 Gigabyte EP45-UD3P too.
Only a week ago i found out about the SLI hack... WTF! and the performance with the x4 slot!! I was always led to beleive the x4 PCI-Ex slot was Garbage for Crossfire.. never mind SLI!

Excitedly, I prematurely ordered 2x GTX460 Hawks and a Corsair TX750 from my SB build to play with NOW! But Sadly, they're still being shipped to me.
So, while I wait a few more days for my hardware to arrive... It'd be SuperCool to see how well your setup performs! especially since it's somewhat close to my current build.

on a boring wknd.... I await ur post!

P.S. I'm going to be trying the "HyperSLI" mod on my P5B-Deluxe when my cards and PS arrive.
linky= http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=153046 seems-to-me like the most mature implementation for the SLI hack. opinions?
