Sure any properly designed am3 mb would work but only if the 2 extra am3 socket pin-holes are routed by default, as done only on the ones on ASUS list.
So it's easer for AMD to go out and say what they have said. Probably it was to late by the time they found out, and to many mb:s where already manufactured & sold to the market...
