Exclamation No turbo multiplier on i7 970 with E759 Classified board

    Hey folks!

Normally I would not ask many questions when it comes to hardware but this one has got me completely stumped. Basically, I got a new i7 970 a couple days ago and installed it on my EVGA E759 Classified (this is the limited edition board with NF200 chip) running the latest BIOS 77. Before installing the chip I did a full CMOS reset and loaded defaults, powered down the system, and proceeded to install the chip.

Now, I've got everything up and running and the chip is working fine except that no matter what combination I try the turbo multiplier on the chip is not working. I have already verified that it is not working using i7TurboGT, RealTemp, E-LEET, CPU-Z, and CPU Tweaker. I have tried every possible combination of EIST, C-states, and Turbo possible so far with no success. I simply cannot get the 25x multiplier to show up. I've even done multiple CMOS resets followed by setting the appropriate settings, ensuring that I am using the stock multiplier of 24x, etc., with no success.

I'm completely at odds what to do at this point

Any help you can provide I would appreciate! This is stopping me from using the chip to the full potential and I do not know what to do

Don't quote me but I believe the original classified needs to be modded to use westmere cpu's.

NVM found it http://kingpincooling.com/forum/arch...php/t-599.html It's archived but ya get the point.

Before you get ahead of yourselves, i7 970 is Gulftown, not Westmere Westmere is the Xeon variant of Gulftown. To make matters worse I have a confirmation of the turbo multiplier working fine on a vanilla X58 board from EVGA. That's absolutely nuts that I cannot run turbo on this board yet vanilla X58 can do it fine.

PS: Good info nonetheless for those using Westmere chips. I forgot about that thread.

Ummm. I think you are confusing your core names with "code names". For one the vanilla board is completely different from the classified just have a look at the two boards real close. All 6 core westmere desktop parts are codenamed "gulftown" they are in essence all based off the westmere core regardless of whether or not intel decided to call them the server or desktop part.

CPU: Westmere 6C Codename: Gulftown Manufacturing Process: 32nm Cores: 6 Transistor Count: 1.17B Die Size : 240mm2

Well, not sure that I agree with that. Desktop parts are code named Gulftown (http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollecti...codeName=29886), server parts are code named Westmere at least in "popular culture" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehalem...rchitecture%29), however they are both based on Westmere microarchitecture which is a 32nm die-shrink of Nehalem. Even Peter differentiates them this way. Anyway, it's the same CPU but one is for desktop the other is for server. With that said, I fixed the turbo issue. It does require a physical mod to the board, the second one Peter posted on that link (second image). The first disables the second QPI link, the second enables Turbo on Westmere arch. chips. However, I did not know that until EVGA confirmed it for me.

Here is the real link by the way http://kingpincooling.com/forum/showthread.php?t=599

Thanks for your help! Looks like you were bang on the first time, but I had no idea until EVGA actually told me "oh yes, by the way that is also to enable Turbo, not just disable QPI link"
