Well its nice to see people with these insane overclocks!! It encouraged me to overclock with my pair in SLi (Palit Sonic Platinums) and I think I've hit a brick wall, but a wierd one. I've searched and searched and can't see what I'm doing wrong.

My max clock right now is 871/1742/2098(1049)/1062mV

and the moment I go over that I see maybe one 'red dot' or two in Heaven benchmark and I know its not stable, so what do you do? Increase the voltage! This however presents a new problem, the moment I go over 1062mV Voltage the card while benching will eventually do the following:

Ramp up fan speed to cool down card but a few seconds later, BAM, Black screen, then the fans will go even faster probably to 100% and the machine will stay like this.

In this state the PC will still be running in the background, HDD spinning and Led flashing indicating usage, if music is possibly playing it will continue to play such as the heaven benchmark music which confuses the S...ugar out of me!

What I did notice was it may be linked to temps. Over 80c and it would 'black out' on me. Ramping the fans up didn't change the temps much so it may be that. Another senario could be the lack of a VRM heatsink, I tried to solve this by cuting a small part of a XBOX 360 GPU heatsink I had lying around(not that everyone would) and covering both VRMS with it and the result of that is I found generally in games the fans didn't spin up as much, especially in crysis! Result you would think, no. 880Mhz showed the red dot I talked about but I didn't hear the fans as much, when seeing the red dot I instantly stoped the bench but upon returning to the desktop I noticed the temp was 77c at that point but up to that point the bench was fine, hmm . Third and last senario I could think of is the power supply: its an XFX 650w XXX PSU and Supposedly my whole system using the online calculator consumes 590w and although it includes my CPU overclock it doesn't take into account my 460 overclock but then again why would the rest of my system run if the PSU was overloaded?

Two other things I've noticed is that some people reach 90c no probs and one person with the same card as me got to 900 core. Also I'm not sure if it was this forum but I think I saw someone say that they're only stable for their clocks at 60c.

Any ideas? I'm going to go watercooling soon so I'm hopeful for that, my load temps with the max clock is around 77-79c

Thats the same place my card ran out of steam with 1.07v.
I took off the pos fan and cover changed the patse slapped a bigger/better fan to it + volts @ 1.13v = 940 ok to bench, test and play bf2 np.

woah, nice rig. Why dont ya watercool those cards? Wait a sec you got to 900, you must have good airflow, what temps you getting?

This is the highest OC I've got, if I upload more, the voltage is triggered...

    To make the 925MHz, I needed 1.15v.....

thanks mate my cards are both stock 800/1600/4000 0,962vid so at 1,075 i can play crysis at 900/1800/4000 on 65C at 26C ambient temp, amazing cards and that 14x14 fan helps a bunch

i come from water cooled gtx285, i lost a LOT of money on my country since noone uses WC here so this was my best buy for shooo

Ran some Kombustor. There's no proof of me using Kombustor specifically (because I don't know how to fit it on the screen) but you can see the stress the GPU was under in the Afterburner graphs.
I swear I can get 1GHz if I could overvolt past 100mV... it stays stable for like 20 seconds in Kombustor with 1GHz, but fails after that.

EDIT: Stock cooling from MSI's Hawk. Haven't played enough with memory timings/voltage yet. I did add a little auxiliary voltage and that definitely helped the card stay a little more stable when I did a 970MHz run. I didn't feel like it was worth showing you guys because, while it was stable, it didn't seem trustworthy.

    Here's the rig

nice rig man and nice OC, but what's the real volts for 950 ? my Sonic Platinum you can see above take 1.087 for 900/1800/4000 and i can game crysis, moh and bc2 perfect but over that needs more volts

    cheers

I used Afterburner to overvolt core to 1.07v. That's the real voltage. The auxiliary voltage is like +5mV and it does seem to help with stability.

Not yet. But these are supposed to be gtx560 bios's, http://techpowerup.com/vgabios/index...ace=&memSize=0

however I'm not sure of the validity, I'll open them up in my hex editor and examine.

And this guy has flashed yet it stayed at the 336sp http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/9240...y-460-a-3.html

I tried the Tesla 263.06 and got roughly the same score (coming from 266.58WHQL ) on 3dmark06 and Vantage and a tiny bit lower on 3dmark11 and the same 41.5 fps on MafiaII ( The current game that Im playing ) so Im guessing the optimizations are already in the 266.58 ?

    EDIT:

I was reading around about unlocking the max volts for the card using a bios mod and tried to grab an image of my bios, used GPU-Z to save a copy of my bios and opened it up under nibitor, integrity button is red, used nibitor instead to dump the bios and the integrity button is also red.. Im using a Inno3d GTX460 OC model. Any suggestions on this ?

I managed to edit my bios to increase voltage upto 1.212v and unlocked the fan speed upto 100%
Even at stock speeds, the VRM gets very toasty and I cant even put my finger there longer than a second, so I added some heatsink on the VRM using those Coolermaster mini heatsinks with some 3M thermal tape, the heatsinks becomes very hot as well during load so this means they are doing their job, still the back side is pretty toasty.

    Would would 1.212v be safe for 24/7 usage ( gaming ) ?

Aside from Kombustor do you guys still use 3dmark for synthetic stability test ? What specific tests?

I'm using EVGA GTX 460 1GB EE. The default VID is 1.00V and I edited the BIOS to run at 800/1600/2000 with NiBiTor.

A few days I go, I got a Sparkle GTX 460, purple fan version for SLI. The default VID is 0.9375V.
I tried to clock it to match EVGA's 800/1600/2000 but it couldn't finish 3D Mark 11 loop so I guess the low VID is the culprit.

Is 0.9375V too low to reach 800/1600/2000? Or the card I got is crappy with bad heatsink? Temperature is lower than my VGA though, and less noise.

Could be, you can always try 1.0v then you should be fine. Temps don't sound like the problem here.

I would also like to know if 1.2v or just under would be good for 24/7 gaming? Especially if your under water? Personally from what I've seen on this forum is that it shouldn't be a problem
