Maybe they have been reading my posts? In this way they will avoid to have too many cards with "same performance for most gamers" on hand. AMD made a smart move here, but this a change of plans.

XBitLabs' original info was wrong. AMD's original news release was wrong. AMD fessed up and sent out a corrected email later in the day.

HD 6970 2GB remains the high end card and likely won't have a 1GB variant unless any upcoming NVIDIA cards perform better than expected.

Plus, the 1GB version of the HD 6950 shouldn't be too much of a surprise since anyone who read the release-day articles would have seen AMD already spilling the beans in mid-December.
