That was a good question, what do you choose when these is so many "almost the same"-AMD-cards with different prices?.

We have 6950-2GB that can be unlocked to 6970 already, and soon you will get a 6950/70-1GB too. All these will probably perform the same for most gamers (who are using 24" monitors). The way I look at it, it's going to be really hard to sell those "expensive" 6970-2GB in this price/performance mess AMD has created.

I am going to guess that they make the 1gb version flash proof. But if not, your logic is flawed, either you need the 6970 2gb and have the money to pay for it or you don't. Its more options for the consumer. Not everyone games at 2560 resolution or eyeinfinity. If anything this will cannabilize 6950 2gb only sales. However the $20 difference really makes the consumer think about it a bit longer in justifying.
This is a smart move by AMD. They need something to battle the GTX 560 at its price range and at the same time mitigating manufacturing costs.
