What is a "safe" voltage to run it at? I've read it drastically reduces the life of your cpu

What do vppl and vmch voltages do? And are there other voltage important for overclocking? I have seen them mentioned here often, and I kinda know what voltage to raise when what problem occurs, but it would be nice to know what they actually do.

The VPLL will help you gain a higher FSB but only by say 20MHz or so and setting the vpll too high will kill your cpu rathwer quickly. I'd say 1.8volts tops for any long term benching

Johnny, just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to mark up that very clear picture that you posted.
I followed your directions and put a 1K potentiometer between the points, put some electrical tape down on my board, bent the end of the legs out on the potentiometer to make flat "legs". Then I hot glued the legs to the electrical tape.
If I needed to remove this, I doubt you'd even be able to tell I had soldered something on there at one point.
But it did fix my vdroop issue! I now fluctuate between .002 MAX as read by DMM. (Wavetek 38XR) And I am able to get MUCH more stable overclocks now with my E8400, before it took 1.46v to get it to be stable, now I'm getting 4 and 5 hour orthos runs on 1.40..

Vdroop mod works wondersI still don't seem to be able to get the Vcore mod working properly it seems, stuck at around 1.72. It is working but is not working as well as other Vcore mods I have done. I must look into this and see what is going on........
Thanx for vdroopmod Johnny. It works perfect. With 620 Ohms it gets *-0.01-*-0.02v under load.

Sorry to bring this thread back up but I have some questions. I set the variable resistor to 635 ohms before I attached to the board. Once I attached both leads to the correct place, i checked using a multimeter and it shows ~180. Is this correct? I tried adjusting the screw while the resistor is connected but it really didnt change much. Can I assume, if I left it at 635 before I connected the leads that even though it says 180 after I connected the 2 leads, that it is really 635 through the resistor? I hope that doesnt sound confusing. I'm just afraid of turning on my board and frying something.

Once the VR is connected you are measuring the resistance of the entire circuit.
Trust your first measurement!

I pre-set my 1k Ohm VR to 650 Ohms, and soldered it in. I actually went by an incorrect picture the 1st time b/c I assumed the GND labeled in the pic was correct when in fact it wasn't. Reading this thread led me to the solution, and here are my results!![]()
THE MOD!
Here are some screenshots!
1st up is pre-mod at 1.46v set in BIOS, 1.44v appearing in HWMonitor (CPU-Z only displays VID in CoreTemp for some reason on this latest BIOS) at idle & 1.40v under load. That's 0.04v vdroop & 0.02v vdrop
Now this is after the mod. I set the BIOS to 1.42v and got 1.42v idle, and 1.40v load! Vdroop has been cut in half to 0.02v and it appears vdrop has been eliminated!
It may be possible to tune the VR for better vdroop control, but it's too hard for me to get to the VR w/ the MoBo now back in the case. I may mess w/ it later.

I'm noop so getting lost a bit. There are Vdroop mod and Vcore mod. Do I need to do both mod or just either of them. It looks like people want to do the Vdroop mod. So, when we need the Vcore mod. We always can increase Vcore from BIOS, do we? Eventhough, for the Vcore mod how much should I reduce the resistant from the 50Kohm? THanks
