That's exactly what was said for the X1900 and then the HD2900... I'm VERY disappointed with the performance of this card, could you imagine the difference if AMD had gone for 1920SP? Still it's a good card but I think the GTX570 and GTX580 came out of nowhere and just makes this card look like rubbish!
Must also consider that the 6990 is just around the corner and whilst I don't doubt it'll be clocked lower than the 6970 I'm sure performance will be where we expect it to. Wonder why the card was delayed for soo long, any bets on TSMC messing things up again?
And no chance of getting these cards before Christmas now :o, real **** up at AMD!!

TSMC isn't to fault - there are plenty of cards.

The delay in Cayman delayed Antilles since its based on Cayman. Anandtech hinted though that Antilles has a lot more nifty features as a platform for future dual GPUs though

What's wrong with this card? It's faster than the previous generation and faster than the newly released 570. It's between -15% and parity with the 580 as well and for $140 less. You also get more video memory which is always nice for AA, AF, and games making use of large texture sets. You also get improved crossfire scaling versus previous generations. It's a good step forward even if not a major one. This is what we were told to expect. "Rubbish"? Please.

Getting a card before Christmas isn't a question. Mine will be here tomorrow, thanks.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

Lol, I see you're sticking to your own guidelines. Btw, the 6970 isn't faster than the 570. They both get their lumps in but it's a wash.

If they do AMD will drop prices. So that would be welcome, IMO.

For the 2900 ok .. but X1900XTX and X1950XTX ? where those cards was under performer against the Nvidia one ? sorry i have maybe some memory problem ( it's not like it was yesterday after all ) ...

for 6970. hum i wait too see crossfire test allready vs 580 ( have see only 2 but no direct comparaison with 580 - 570SLI ) and Overclocker results . ( the anandtech let see some good thing allready, without proper cap profile )

For driver thing, when i don't hope for miracle, there's anyway some strange information of disfunctionnement, when the card make a good job in some games, it take the dive in some other, games with similar engine ( can be due to a bad choice, or just cause the card have not enough SP for make the difference with previous generation ).

When it's coming from the same people, that hyped the card to no end, I would be really careful.

They are so blinded by fanboyism, that they can't see, that instead of helping AMD, they are severely hurting their image.

There's nothing wrong with these cards, definitely nothing that can't be fixed with better pricing.

So they're not faster than the competition. Who cares, if you like what you get for their price?

Well now that i read several reviews, in general gaming, it is not so espectacular, but it seems it did quite some progress were it was lacking.. tesselation.

I think it was a good launch, of course not the kind of domination people hyped for, but there is so much it can be done in the same process

And what about cranking that tesselation level up ?

But on that note while the 6970 does well at moderate tessellation levels, at extreme tessellation levels it still falls to the more potent GTX 400/500 series.

And what if you buy a ferrari to drive on a gravel road? Utterly pointless also? Yeah that's what I thought. Nv aren't too smart tesselating scenes that are practically invisible to the human eye and makes no sense.
As far as overall performance, Cayman falls in line perfectly, as AMD still has the performance lead with hemlock and it's a year old! Besides, this hard launch schools nv on how to do a real hard launch. Cayman cards seem to outnumber fermi by at least 10 to 1. Gibbo from ocuk commented that he's sold more 6900's in preorder than he has 570's overall!
