AMD's coolers are unbearable at beyond 50%... at least that was the case with 4870, 5870 and 5970. I vaguely remember trying to limit my 5870 at 35%

maybe a new fan?
afaik 2900XT, 4870, 5850, 5870, 5970, 6870 used pretty much the same fan only with a different cooler so it's time for a new one

looking at the 6970 XFX one for £280 @ Scan quite cheap!!

A bit of early benching at OCUK gave the results of

6970 = 21000+ GPU score at stock in Vantage
6970 CF = 34000+ GPU score

may change with newer drivers

Actually a 4.4 is actually slower then the i7 at 3.4 i think it was, yet still yields better results, anyways im not here to argue im just here because im pumped of the release

Why be afraid that thing is horrible. I'm looking forward to see how it does in games, for those that care about vantage/3dmark they can use LN2.

edit: I bet you won't see review with 10.12 drivers (shortly after NDA is lifted) since they are only one day old which is not enough to run "all modern games" etc.

So good results from ATI here and the cards do not get scoulding hot either unlike older 5870 cards. Crank the fan up and the temps can be kept sub 50c.

Power Consumption - The 6970 can draw a maximum of 250W, but it typically won't see over 200W consumption and at idle consumes as little as 20W, the fact we could run a Crossfire overclocked system setup with ease of an OCZ 700W was excellent.

The new drivers are much faster, but I did not get them in time. The new drivers basically mean a 6970 beats a GTX 580 in tessellation or at least is no longer chasing it.

Nvidia are owned, 6970's £80+ cheaper than the 580, and can get 2x 6950's for the same price, and they'll smash it, not bad i say!!

Price to performance is pretty good it looks like it.

I think the other guy is OcUK is right though, I can see a price jumping up after Christmas similar to what happened on the 5870.

It does look slower than gtx 580 which is not a surprise. If priced around 380-400 with the lower model 300, it really doesn't force NV to lower their price though. Its still good value, like the gtx 570. I really like the 2gb so I think that could be the deal breaker. The gtx 580 can lower its price maybe 50 dollars, but they really don't need to if they maintain performance leadership.

With such massive quantities as Goober is showing, I am pretty sure they could have launched this card a month ago, if not earlier.

They used the drivers that came with the cards (8.79.6.0 or 8.79.6.2, both are 10.11, I believe the latter comes with the cards). This is what most people are going to do, aren't they?
10.12 came only yesterday, clearly not nearly enough time to re-bench everything. And AFAIK 10.12 does not support 69xx without mods...

I have a bunch of friends / relatives who only update drivers when they have to... Anyway, it wasn't the point. The point is, only 8.79.6.0 and 8.79.6.2 were available in time to do some proper testing (which takes days, not 2 hours of messing around), both are 10.11, and this is what reviewers used, obviously...
But if you ask me, I love being a lab rat installing all kinds of beta / alpha drivers which often result in all kinds of issues!

Ditto... I think the last time I used a driver from a CD for a videocard was back with my Voodoo 3 3000.

Oh! I remember Voodoo3's CD. You would put it in, Autoplay would commence and if drivers weren't already installed; it didn't even ask you if you wanted to install them, just would display a "terms of service" which you would click OK, and then would install the driver and reset by itself. TMI
