GTX 580 isn't going to die, nvidia will drop the price without a doubt in a day or two if the 6970 is at $360 or $370. It'll be like the HD4800 vs GTX260/GTX280 scenario all over again pricing reaction from nvidia.

It's not even 360$... if it's 300€ in Europe it will be around 300$ in US

I have a fairly confident feeling it'll be $380 for the 6970 and probably like $300 for the 6950.

I guess we know why OCuk stockpiled a pyramid of 6970s then

look how big their die is and how low can they lower it to still be profitable is the question ... anyway .. if those pricing are real i can see lots of 6900 crossfire setups

Exactly so I'm waiting to see how nvidia responds if the 6900 series is priced that cheaply. Can't do consumers harm either way

    GF110 is larger... 550mm2.

    Agreed. $400 doesn't sound unrealistic for 6970.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

I'm still sticking with $299 for 6950 and $399 for 6970 to avoid disappointment.

    6950 vs 6970 vs GTX 580: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...php?t=18217817

This is still with the supplied default drivers that came in the box. Apparently there's some talk going about that a newer 8.851 driver offers a slight performance boost, but we'll see. Gibbo and other people were using 8.790.

ps. It includes overclocked and crossfire results too

Some other info from the link is interesting...
Price - Sub £250 for a 6950 and sub £300 for a 6970 make these cards very competively priced!

OcUK will put its stock live sometime after midnight tonight at which time you should check the following link as we have 1000+ in stock right now!!!!
And this is on a launch day in UK (= quite expensive [by EU standards] by definition).
So they might be actually available for sub 300 EUR...

@ Monstru: will we see your review at midnight? I am hoping to do all the necessary research before heading off to bed!

6970 in QuadFire will probably run over Crysis like a monster truck!

Those results seem quite good. Looks like AMD have got another 4xxx series of cards on their hands. Cheap to produce, and trades blows with Nvidias top GPU, while being cooler, quieter and cheaper to run.

It could be drivers bring the 69xx cards more life too, as it's a new arch for AMD.

I take it the 570 and 580 will be dropping in price very soon.

I wasn't going to buy a card this year, but if these things are cheap, cheap to run, cool and quiet...

Yeah my thoughts exactly. Although one thing that does concern me, is that the difference between a 6950 and 6970 at stock in those heaven benchmarks, is about 3 fps

800 core vs 880, 1250 mem vs 1375, 1408 SP's vs 1536 and only 3 fps difference?? Points to drivers IMO...
