Too bad AMD hasn't been able to up the core clocks much since 4890, it feels like they've hit a wall of some sort. This new generation from Nvidia and AMD has been nothing but disappointing in terms of perf increase. Gone are the days of 2x the performance compared to previous generation, now it's more like 1,2X.

Of course 28nm will once again bring a lot of performance since it's a full node smaller. I'm expecting great things from Nvidia and AMD a year from now.

As you can see in the image above, unlike in their previous attempts at Vapor Chamber cooling with modest sized vapor chambers like in ATI Radeon HD 4870X2, the approach with Radeon HD 6900 Series is more akin to Sapphire's pioneering 3870 Vapor-X, or recently the GeForce GTX 500 Series.

This massive Vapor Chamber cooling is the reason why AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series is achieving remarkable overclocking results, just like the GeForce GTX 580 and 570. We've seen GTX 580 working at 895MHz, GTX 570 at 880MHz as well as viewed results of Radeon HD 6970 clocked at 980MHz, and 6950 at 1010MHz. We've spoken with numerous board manufacturers and they're all telling us that this generation of graphics cards is "vintage", with overclocking headroom spanning much beyond the last generation.

Who'd knew, perhaps TSMC is finally maturing their 40nm process.
I wouldn't be surprised if ATI tapped the same manufacturer for the cooler, seeing as there is a vapour chamber and the plastic ring around the fan.

since when is 28nm a full node ???

of course it will have the same die shrink feel as a full node .. but its not .. lets all blame tsmc and glofo for that ....

Since you read my post wrong. The next generation is a jump from 40 nm to 28 nm which is a considerable change due to 32 nm being cancelled. And if things turn out as bad as they seem after 28nm we're stuck there for a long time.

i didnt read your post wrong ... because they canceled it now seems like a full node .. but it isnt according to the industry ... thats all that i wanted to post ...

but your right .. since they canceled 32nm it now looks like a full node shift ...

I said it's full node smaller, not a full node process, i.e. half node (40nm) -> full node (32nm) -> half node (28nm).

either these are clocks on stock volts or they're very disappointing considering 68xx scale above 1ghz with ease on stock coolers with a small voltage bump

lets wait till some users or real reviews post official info before judging the oc potential ... but i doubt theyd do worse then 6800 in oc headroom .. especially with the powertune feature off

I wouldn't necessarily expect the 6900s to out-clock the 6800s. They have a different and larger die.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.
