It's really much better than people basing their purchasing decisions off of biased reviews. Not suggesting your reviews are biased, people can determine which ones lean one way or the other for themselves obviously. Anyway, it's pretty hard to buy a product based on speculation, since by nature if it were based on speculation, there'd be no product to buy.

And it's not just the GPU market. The CPU reviews are much much more biased IMO, with clear favourtism given to intel since it happens to have the fastest CPU in benchmarks on the market. Only second hommage is given to the winner at each individual price point. That kind of thinking is killing the enthusiast market. Money talks, and intel had to put it's $1 Billion a year bribe money somewhere...

    Anyway, roll on Cayman!

Just an observation, don't ask me for links, i've seen this today, but can't find post anymore
I don't buy the 6+6 pin it just doesn't make any sense. Also alot of stuff probably gets lost in translation and if its 6+6 most likely was referring to 6950. To quote VRzone
The card sees the return of two CrossFire connectors, enabling 4-way CrossFireX. Like the Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6, the HD 6970 features the 8-pin+6-pin PCI-e power configuration.

I'm looking at it like this; either it'll beat the GTX580 and cost the same or more($499 price bracket), it'll lose to the GTX580 but be faster than the 570 and hit the $399 bracket, or it'll lose to the GTX570 and hit the $349 bracket. Considering this is AMD's biggest chip since the R600, I heavily doubt AMD could get by with it if it loses to the GTX570, but at the same time I'm not expecting it to take down the GTX580(if it could, I don't see why AMD would be aiming for the 6990 so quickly after), so I'm anticipating it to be around GTX 570 performance and between $399 and $449.

If I'm wrong, then happy day, if I'm not I won't be disappointed. This is just how things appear to me pre-release. Personally, I'm actually more interested right now in the fight between the GTX570 and the 6950 assuming they end up in the same price bracket. One of those two cards are very likely to end up in my system shortly after release.
with a similar power draw to the gtx580 i extect it to perform as well or better than the gtx580 in dx9/10 games, but i'm waiting to see how it handles tesselation and eyefinity. hd58xx cards required crossfire for playable framerates in eyefinity and i'm hoping hd68xx will change that, would make the tech much more appealing.

Yeah, I don't buy it's 6+6 pin but lets just think about it here:

He's saying 6+6pin and ~GTX580 performance. So either the 6970 is much more power efficient than the GTX580 still (and it is vastly improved from the 480) and so the 6970 requires 6+6 only, or something is getting lost in translation and it's a 6950. But then he's saying it matches ~GTX580 performance...

Actually to quote neliz @ beyond3d
I don't think there are XT samples out there, or at least not much.. probably all the info we get is from the Pro.
This next week cant get here fast enough

A little bit of inside info given to me is yes they are faster than 580 but by how much i have no idea and they wouldn't break NDA to divulge anything else.

    6950 Core 890 Memory 1375 6+6pin
    6970 Core 950 Memory ???? 6+8

So if the poster said the 6+6 card is in 580 territory...

Might suffer a bit in Vantage due to Vantage using the 5th SIMD quite often I think.

The clocks on that are awfully close, so if those #'s are true, then the 6970 must have a ton more units or something

I am not saying this is what's going to happen but people have to remember that massive performance boosts do come with a SIGNIFICANT number of downfalls (die size, power consumption, cost, profit margins, etc) when maintaining a status quo manufacturing process - in this case 40nm.

There isn't a company in this world that could overcome any of these without some kind of miracle product. I am sure we'd all agree that TSMC's 40nm process isn't one that can be refined any more to allow for that kind of genre breaking design revolution.
Pretty easy for you to say all this with confidence, assuming you have the card benchmarked and ready to publish.

I wish ATI would design a better reference coolers, because since 5xxx their coolers look like trash. I rather wait for a non reference card.

According to FUD, Radeon HD 6970 will be priced at $450 in the US, €429 to €449 in EU.
He also confirms decent stock at the start of sales on December, 15th.

He never read 2 times the article when it's for an AMD ... this was not him who was write some days ago, the 6970 will not come before 2011?

We have received confirmation from multiple sources that AMD’s Radeon HD 6970 and 6850 cards, codenamed Cayman, are scheduled to launch December 15th.

he was maybe more concentrate for the rest of the article..

Our sources indicate that Geforce GTX 580 should end up faster than Radeon HD 6970 at least in many of the popular benchmarks. The fact that AMD is pricing Cayman cards a bit lower than the 580 lends a bit more credibility to such claims.

does he can't write something about AMD without selling Nvidia at same time ?

... we guess that part of the story is that Geforce GTX 580 ended up much better than ATI expected.
Wait,... overclocked GTX 480 ended up much better than AMD expected?

I don't think it is fair to call GTX580 an overclocked 480. The card is a little bit different and it is a good card...

but it didn't end up better than expectet, in fact it was just as expected (a slightly higher clocked 512sp edition) which is easy to simulate...

In terms of performance is a overclocked GTX 480, nothing really new. In fact GTX 580 is the GTX 480 that AMD (and us) expected a year ago .
AMD should be full of drunk monkeys to donīt expect something like that.

No argument here, Fermi was late, but after the volcanic 480, 580 seems nice. And to be honest, Fermi was late but the game stays the same. nVidia has fastest single chip card and we all hope AMD is going to bring something better... That's all I wanted to point out.

A card's "good"ness is not entirely dependent on its performance. Power draw, temperature, noise and price are very important too. While 580's performance levels were not unexpected, other factors were significantly better than what anyone was expecting.

Better? yes, but nothing unexpected in any way (power consumption, noise, temps,...) .
How can be possible that AMD didnīt expect the GTX580? Is a nonsense.
