If the 6970 is 30%-40% faster than the GTX 580, then the 6990 is an epic card.
Sounds kinda off though, but who knows.
AMD Threadripper 12 core 1920x CPU OC at 4Ghz | ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme X399 motherboard | 32GB G.Skill Trident RGB 3200Mhz DDR4 RAM | Gigabyte 11GB GTX 1080 Ti Aorus Xtreme GPU | SilverStone Strider Platinum 1000W Power Supply | Crucial 1050GB MX300 SSD | 4TB Western Digital HDD | 60" Samsung JU7000 4K UHD TV at 3840x2160
30% over 580 with 6970 is not impossible, but I'll believe it when I see it.
Maybe it is misinterpreted by him and really should be 30%-40% faster than HD5870?
Anyway I doubt that 40% faster than Cypress is enough to charge for this card £400 in the UK
In case you're wondering where I got that price from .... http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...5&postcount=69
RiG1: Ryzen 7 1700 @4.0GHz 1.39V, Asus X370 Prime, G.Skill RipJaws 2x8GB 3200MHz CL14 Samsung B-die, TuL Vega 56 Stock, Samsung SS805 100GB SLC SDD (OS Drive) + 512GB Evo 850 SSD (2nd OS Drive) + 3TB Seagate + 1TB Seagate, BeQuiet PowerZone 1000W

SmartPhone Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE
XBONE paired with 55''Samsung LED 3D TV
after thinking about it again i really expect 6970 to beat gtx 580 (those 30% might be possible in selected tests)
why? going from 5870 to 6970 we have the following improvements:
320 -> 480 shader clusters (50% improvement)
higher clockspeed
doubled front end with higher efficiency
2-3 times higher tesselation performance
doubled ROP performance
extra TMUs (5870 wasn't tmu bottlenecked)
2gb vs 1gb ram
6 (possibly 7) gbps ram vs. 4.8 gbps, possibly a reworked RAM controller with more cache = 25-50% more mem BW
everything in this list points to a performance improvement higher than 30% which puts 6970 on the same level as gtx 580 and that's a low estimate
additionally an improvement under 30% (= less performance than GTX580) would put 6950 at the same performance level as 6870 which makes no sense at all...)
(please tell me if i made a mistake in this list)

It seems possible, but we don't know in what context he is talking about. If it really is that fast I hope they spend some of the extra power on perfecting IQ.
Edit: actually he does specify the context: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...&postcount=133
Don't know system specs but I would assume it would be an i7/i5 CPU. Benchmarks were..

most likely.. 30-40% faster than 580, I don't think so![]()

Anyway, if we take 35% more than GTX580 into account and this link right here (1920x1200 resolution graphs). http://techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/...TX_580/27.html
135/75=1.8
We get 80% faster than Radeon HD 5870. Not entirely impossible seeing that this leap is pretty similar to Radeon HD 3870 -> 4870.
woooow comparing the leap from 3870 to 4870 with the 5870 to 5970 is wishful thinking
4870 didn't do a mere 50% increase over its predecssor, it went from 320 to 800 SPs (125% increase), doubled the mem BW and had other enhancements, i highly doubt that we're going to see a 3870-4870 leap again
6970 is going to beat 580 by a small margin (5-10%) everything else is overhyping
@Shadov: DualGPU card is going to be lower clocked and i expect it to be only 50% faster than a single 6970

I can play crude math game too : if we take 6870 as a baseline,we have 1920 vs 1120 SPs.If we assume that the new 4way arrangement brings 90% of 5way performance in games and if we figure in the clock difference(that is in 6870 favor,900Mhz vs likely 800-850Mhz for 6970),plus a better mem BW(10% perf. increase impact) for 6970 we get : 1920/1120*0.9*850/900*1.1=1.6x faster than 6870. According to the image above, 70x1.6=112pts or 12% above 580. That's reasonable,12% I can buy. But 30-40% above 580 is highly unlikely IMO.

rational thinking wont allow me to believe it kis 30% faster than 580 sorry. the only case I can see that happening is in Vantage.
now if they mean faster than 480 then I could believe that.
