Boinc on Fedora 14 won't attach to project

I'm a bit of a linux newb and have been following the linux help thread so I've decided to try my hand at messing around with a few of the different distributions. I recently installed Fedora and tossed Boinc on it (both the manager and the client) but the problem is, when I click on "Attach to project", nothing happens. There's no window that pops up that allows me to select WCG. Is there anything Boinc depends on to run properly that I may have forgotten?

Make sure the client is running first. Other than that, open the manager from the terminal so you can see if any error messages pop up.

Also, I don't know if Fedora comes with a strict firewall, which could interfere with coms between the manager and the client.

started up the client, then the manager. now the bottom right-hand corner of the gui just says "disconnected", even with the firewall disabled...

Ok, either it's not communicating with the client or the client isn't running. Check your task manager or enter "top" without the quotes into a terminal and make sure boinc is running. If you try to start the client from the terminal make sure you use the run_client script rather than trying to start it directly.

The task manager reports it as running. How would I properly use the run_client script?

If you're using a desktop environment, just double click on it from your file manager to run it. If you're doing it from the terminal, cd to the right directory and ./run_client

So, here's a fun fact - the version of BOINC that downloads through the package manager doesn't contain run_client or run_manager. I ended up downloading BOINC from Berkeley and did as you said through the command line and it works fine. Not the way I would've wanted to do it, but it's good to go. Thank you for your help!

Just make sure you remove the one from the package manager before you reboot or you could end up with weird issues.

If you setup your remote_host and GUI_rpc_auth .cfg files you can connect to the boinc client with another computer. It sounds like your client is running but your problems are all related to the manager connecting to the local client.

Yeah I uninstalled the version from the package manager before I did anything else. I noticed right away that it was causing the issue. Using that version seemed like the easy way to get up and running but I suppose the only real way to learn Linux is to pop open the terminal and get typing!

Well, yes and no. These days you can do most things via the GUI. It's only when you want to do something a little different that you NEED to open the terminal, but that's when you get access to command options that you just can't get to from a GUI. Once you get used to the terminal it's faster as well since you don't have to hunt and peck for buttons, drag through tabs and all the other easy, but slower, things we do.
