GTX 580 is barely 20% better on avarage than 480 even on the leaked Nvidia slides, it definetely won't be any better than that, and it won't beat a 5970, let alone a 6990. A 6970/50 who knows?

Reviewers might not care for might be's, but it's proper to at least mention in the conclusion that a competitor will soon emerge and that's what this card fill have to fight.

ps. Some little birdies told it might be 14:00 GMT.

Ehm, compared to what? The 6870 and 6850 are priced at about half of the GTX580 so there's no way to compare them. It's like saying GT430 is a ty card because the 5870 is muuuuch faster (but I'm not sure that argument is valid because the GT430 is a ty card compared to the similarly priced ATI/AMD offering).

The new generation of AMD is just as much a new generation as the GTX580. Both are redesigns of current architectures...

I agree about Cayman, it better arrive in time, and it better deliver what they promise, because otherwise AMD will be in big trouble.

I don't have any cards, but can promise you that those "thing" that AMD has chosen to cal a "new generation" will look really bad tomorrow.
Your point is AMD cant wait 10 days to release its product as scheduled because gtx 580 will be so awesome and will shake the foundations of the earth and nobody will resist waiting to see the competition.
This is where we disagree. AMD cannot sell you Cayman even if it turned out 50% faster and 50% cheaper than the 580. Youre already sold the moment you heard the very first rumour about that card and nothing AMD releases will change your mind.
What you need to get into your head is that you dont represent the average consumer and that AMD does not need to do anything fast because of tomorrows reviews because they have their own schedule and as long as it is fulfilled they will not be losing all their customers as you say.

Again if youre so sure Cayman wont be competitive you should at least share with us what everyone else doesnt seem to have - proof.

i think if AMD were to release a few leaks, it could help steer customers away from purchasing an 580 and waiting for caymen.
but honestly i doubt there will be enough 580s on the market to really make a big dent (we all know theres people out there who are buying both because they are flat out xtreme). and since caymen isnt too far away, the delay difference will not cause many sales to be lost. and its a high end part which makes up a very small chunk of the population

in the end, i dont think AMD will have many lost customers by doing nothing vs giving out every last detail.

Thanks for clarifying what those "things" are. Barts doesnt have to be compared to the 580 and nothing will be destroyed tomorrow. I agree that AMD should release the Cayman soon, but no need to be over dramatic.

    awesome

i hope no one hates me for saying this
its a very nice improvement, but sadly this is what the 480 should have been. 12-13% better perf than a 480, with a great drop in power consumption. but still not enough to really make wish i had one, perf per dollar is near identical to a 480.

also overclocking seemed to offer very low results, maybe its time he switched to a different game to test OC settings.

If you don't have a card, you are likely to not have signed a NDA either.... maybe a friend was nice to him to hand it over.

Well, he broke NDA so I am quite sure NVIDIA's response will be swift and brutal.

So let's say altmost equal to 5970, consumes 10-15W more, and cost's 150-170$ less.
The price difference to 5870 is justified by performance.

GTX 580 as powerfull as HD5970, really ? Quite odd review
Why, 5970 was better 25-30% than GTX 480(in some situation). So GTX 580 is better with 17-20%(chip performance) + drivers= 25%.
Because Ati drivers didn't improve almost nothing, but Nvidia with 258.96...260.89, with 251.xx added 5-7% more performance.

Perf. is 15% better than GTX 480 (87 * 1.15 = 100), with 30W lower power usage and substantially quieter cooling. Good job Nvidia, although overclocking doesn't seem to be very impressive.

additionally, there is only 1 gpu on the card, never have to worry about micro-stutter or driver updates just to play new games.

can't wait to see what cayman has to offer, but this looks like a winner.

Thanks for the link. The card looks strong, a nice drop in power consumption, not bad at all. The performance/watt is still not too good though, but a nice enough improvement where it won't bother me so much.

Will be very interesting to see what the 6970 brings to the table. I hope we know soon, I need a new card like no ones business, I'm using on board graphics right now.

He's using 10.7 drivers for the HD 5000 series cards without the App Profiles that brought MASSIVE CF scaling improvements.

I thought the average was around 30%, if you factor in games that don't scale with Xfire. Yea that does seem a bit low, but the 5970 is highly dependent on profiles/drivers so it depends on what mix of games are used.

edit - what SKYMTL posted. Speaking of, when can we expect your review?
