Looks like the PR is in full force
Maybe I'm too dense mathematically to "get" those graphs (and yea, I know they don't start at 0), but they seem to indicate that the 580 will pretty much suck...
It's not like the GTX 480 is so blazingly fast that a card ~12% faster or so is going to be mindblowing. You could overclock a 480 and get that...
Just more confirmation for the 15-20% with slightly less power consumption. All in all pretty much what GF100 was supposed to be. But if Cayman doesn't fail like R600 I'm not sure if this is good enough. Of course they can always drop prices, and I'm all for a good price war.![]()
"No, you'll warrant no villain's exposition from me."
the graph is perf per watt
so if perf of 480 is 100, and power is 100
then the 580 would be perf of 115 for power of 85 resulting in
(115/85)/(100/100) =
135/100 = 135
=35% better perf per what, which is almost exactly what i was saying.
so because we know perf per watt, and perf, we can find the watt by doing simple algebra. (which i didnt do lol)
2500k @ 4900mhz - Asus Maxiums IV Gene Z - Swiftech Apogee LP
GTX 680 @ +170 (1267mhz) / +300 (3305mhz) - EK 680 FC EN/Acteal
Swiftech MCR320 Drive @ 1300rpms - 3x GT 1850s @ 1150rpms
XS Build Log for: My Latest Custom Case
Even then.. Its lower than 15% by doing the algebra :X
If you use stalker as comparison base (credit to DarthShader at Beyond3D forum), you get around 92% TDP of GTX480 -.-
Imagine stalker on GTX480 runs at 60fps.
17% higher perf would be 70,2
You know TDP of GTX480 is 250.
60/250 = 0,24.
0,24+(0,24*0,27) = 0,3048.
70,2/0,3048 = 230 TDP.
230/250 = 0,92.
nVIDIA must be insane to launch this card at those prices. What the hell are they thinking?![]()
Like said before, it's cool to achieve 15% performance gains with 10w lower TDP...
but with [its rumored prices + Cayman XT and Pro's rumored performances + Cayman XT and Pro's rumored prices] it indeed looks like it's going to be a slaughter in favor of AMD.
Sure, I could wait, but why would I if the 6970 turns out to be a beast and at a much lower cost anyway? I'm intrigued by the MLAA feature as well, and the longer I wait the more value my 470's would lose after these new launches in any case, so I wouldn't gain much by waiting. Not sure what the point of the last line was there...
Whats really puzzling is abnormally high performance increase in Vantage , yet it doesn't translate to real world gameswhat made it jump almost 40% over regular GTX 480.

Yea. They're going to get beat by Cayman, and "raped" by Antilles.
So, for a second year in a row, Nvidia may be competing in a price war as opposed to a performance war. This also means that AMD/ATI's current architecture is maturing very nicely and is supposedly going to be not only more powerful than Fermi, but will also consume less power for equivalent performance to Nvidia's chips.
This is a great time for GPU enthusiasts. All DX11 cards (excluding the 5970 and maybe Antilles) are looking to be some of the cheapest GPU parts in years. The Radeon 6800 series and GTX 460 are both proof positive of this.![]()

humm I was thinking of holding onto my last 5970.... if Antilles delivers I smell one heck of a x-mas present coming on... and maybe a couple more monitors.... 5 monitor eyefinity?
Let's play wait & see, shall we ? IMHO, for a "minor" refresh chip, i think this card offers a decent improvement. Regarding value, let's see what AMD can bring to the table first before making any firm judgement.
Wow, i've been an apologist for Fermi in the past few days, that has to be a record.
BTW, i think AMD want to be behind this time so they can make sure that the presentation slide graphs will contain an official performance result of GTX 580, if Cayman turns out to be as good as promised, this can really show them in a very good light among enthusiasts.![]()
