My personal feeling that the "right" price would be $500-600 for the 970 and add a $150 premium for the unlocked XE models.

No,no where near that much.
Systems:
SR2 rig: Investment of maybe $2500.00
There are factors in that as the board,case,memory and PSU were given to me.
Dual 24 core AMD MC system: $750.00
The cpu's were a gift, an unexpected one.
Dual Westmere:$2000.00
Board was a review sample
Sammy: Maybe $300.00 total
New 6 core Intel I just built;board,cpu and memory arrived in a box 2 weeks ago as a gift from a good friend.Totally unexpected.
Maybe $250.00 into that build.
If I had to go and buy all of this retail it wouldn't be here as no way in hell could I afford all of this.

Oh nice gifts you got from friends and other people around, i have spend tons of money on my hardware, every month about 1500euros or saving that amount for something i want buy in future.

6000euros for xeons + 2 ES, 1000euros for i7 980x, graphics cards.. well dont want even count.

My first build cost me $1250.00 back in 2000.
A 700MHz AMD slot A.
As to these high end systems it's all about what your interests are.
I don't drink, do a vacation once a year for a few days.
This is what I enjoy spending my money on.

Now this guy is 59, IQ in the 170's and although in upper management started as a electronics engineer.
He was mesmerized and said they had nothing like this kind of power except their mainframe and he wasn't even sure that this wasn't faster than the mainframe.

NoI didn't..For that run I had HT shut off..
Actually made itto 5270 but it froze there.
I doi have a pic I took of cpuz on the screen at that speed..

That's the max that I'd go.
These things ain't cheap ya know!

thats nice ,my old 980x clocks like yours, but need lots of tweaking and heavy air
but in the other hand that 990x is amazing and i dont think new Gulf reached its peak,not on air
