Kind of unimpressive performance wise. However hopefully the lower power consumption is true and these overclock 10% more than the original.

Why is the vantage performance the most impressive gain? Thats kind unusual since it is close to a 40% gain over the gtx 480 and we are not close to seeing that in games. Hopefully this means drivers can ring out another 10%. Because at those figures, it will be losing to a 5970 most of the time(I don't expect cayman to top the 5970 either).

well you waited for the right time, end of November will be a great time to buy with the GTX 580 on the market and AMD's full Cayman line up.

I think so, lots of good stuff on the horizon and some tough choices.

hmmm, I wonder if I should hold onto my 5970 and wait for the 6xx series...unless they go straight to 7 to catch up the numbering with AMD. Does anyone here use 2 480s with Nvidia surround?

there was a post about texture units doubling and so maybe its arch was slightly reworked? or it could be the memory was starved and this one has much faster ram in it now, but isnt noticeable in most titles.

Depends on what you want. But I recommending holding off entirely this round because a 5970 should be good for pretty much anything. Unless you can see your 5970 for 500 dollars which might be difficult at this point, I would hold off.

If you have issues with crossfire and cayman and 580 match performance and you can sell your card for 400 still, then it might be worth a go.

Hehe yeah! But I have to admit, I'm pissed off that Nvidia couldn't deliver the REAL Fermi at launch.

If Nvidia would have released the 480 with these specs, then Fermi would have practically dominated Cypress and about pulled even with Hemlock.

So never again will I be an early adopter. Instead I will wait for the inevitable respin..

Then you would've spent an additional 6 months extolling the virtues of PhysX to us, only to buy a GTX580 that will probably slot in the *exact same* performance tier relative to Cayman and Antilles?

Kinda depends on if you're talking desktop or mobile, AMD didn't dominate desktop, overall is close enough to say it doesn't matter.

Hopefully the gtx 580 won't crap the bed this time because of the extra TMU when it comes to high resolution, high AA settings because it should of had the advantage last go simply because of the extra memory, but as we saw that was not the case.

Yep i guess you're right. I wonder what kinda result AMD would have if they were not so supply constrained during their initial reign as the only DX 11 cards provider in the market.

You have to wonder what kind of result Nvidia would have if they were not so dx11 product constrained for such a long period of time, afterall it delayed the entire lineup. When you consider marketshare isn't decided by highend product but more or less products under $200 and how long it took Nvida to market with their complete dx11 lineup for mainstream they're doing surprisingly well.

No, actually i agree with you, R600 debacle sucked, so did Agena. They made their own bed with those, so i didn't insinuating that AMD's all angels.

Yep i hope both IHVs overachieve this time compared to last time, nVidia on execution, AMD on architectural improvement.
