I don't see any catch? A card with similar current highend performance in DX9/10 games, improved performance in DX11 games and added features all at a lower cost? Doesn't seem unreasonable to me?

No doubt about it, its more efficient than R870, I can't wait to see what AMD has up their sleves with their high end parts. Im hoping that Caymen XT is on par and or exceeds that 5970 at $500. I just hope its not more than $550...

    Finally some more concrete infos!

Alright so a 6850 @ 725 MHz with 1120 SP's just trails the 5850 with 1440SP's. It's ~230mm^2, which makes it roughly 2/3 the size of the Cypress and should be very competitively priced against the GTX 460, which it should beat no problem.

    The 6870 @ 900 Mhz with 1280 SP's just trails the 5870 with 1600 SP's, though it's clocked 50 Mhz faster.

Wow, I can't even imagine what Cayman XT with 480 x 4 = 1920 SP's can do. If it keeps a similar ratio, we're talking this as the equivalent of a 2400 SP Cypress... so this should be much faster than the GTX 480. And then Antilles....

I just meant that if the card is about as fast as a 5870, but $200 instead of $400, what would be the point of buying a 5870? That's why I say I don't see the business sense.

Cause the 5870 is going EOL.

Keep this in mind: Cypress is 330 mm^2. There's no point in making a less profitable chip. Yields decrease exponentially, not linearly with size - meaning that Cypress being 50% larger than Barts may have yields far more than 50% worse (theoretically).

Thus there is no point in continuing making Cypress. Plus, now you free up 40nm wafers for Barts and Cayman production

If it performed closer to a 5870, like that leak I will be alot more impressed and less disappointed. But I have my doubts. its 33% smaller while having the same amount of real shaders as cypress on the same process?

Also, isn't that score low for a 5870? Should it score around 19,000?

    1) New architecture - you can't really compare SP count for SP count if the shader core and front end have been changed

    2) RV770 was 256mm^2. RV670 was 192mm^2. Despite being only 33% larger than RV670, the RV770 had 2.5x the SP count and many more TMUs. All this on the same 55nm process.

    3) 4 instruction shaders vs. 5 should save room too.

Needless to say, AMD knows how to do more on the same process...

I understand the whole EOL thing, I just don't see the price tag being $200...that would be WAY too good to be true...but if it is...

common trait on midrange cards to shove sales on higher models.

Also, 3dmark scores are HEAVILY cpu influenced.

This is the same BS that Nvidia tried to pull a million times in the past.

It has nothing to do with OH DONT WORRY BRO ITS ALL ABOUT THE PRICE/PERF RATIO!!!!! It has to do with DECEIT, I REPEAT, DECEIT. It's a marketing tactic designed to fool ppl into thinking something is better than it is. Again, it's:

MARKETING BS MEANT TO DECEIVE THE GENERAL POPULATION

Maybe you'd understand how normal ppl that you're SUPPOSED to interact with on a daily basis approached computer related purchase if you left your cave.

Another thing you should get into your thick skull is that ATI and Nvidia DO NOT MAKE THEIR MONEY OFF NERDS LIKE US. THEY MAKE IT OFF MAINSTREAM COMPONENTS SOLD IN MAINSTREAM STORES OR ON MAINSTREAM SITES LIKE DELL. We are the 1% in this market, so stop making assumptions based on the hardcore segment...WE ARE THE MINORITY.

first of all amd has added new features for blu ray decode stuff ... + they redid the shader layout of the arch ... its more then just a rename ... but now we dont know everything officially so why dont you take a chill pill and wait for factual evidence ...

Now you are making up, who EVER even insinuated the 6870 was going to be much faster (let alone 2x) than a 5870? No one.

It will be on Par with 5870 and cost less, use less power and be cooler.

If you don't accept AMD's naming explanation when they give it, hey it's OK
but before they give it complaining is just starting a war.

Well this is my last post on this subject, I think I wasted a page total on this nonsense already and we don't agree that's fine.

I'll be sure to post though on October 22nd, when the super awesome 6870 comes out and doubles the performance of the 5870.

That was sarcasm dude...and in response to a dude who insinuated that the 6870 will be fast or something. You basically took my comment out of context.

Anyway, as you said, we don't agree, let's end this .

ATI WILL NOT price the 6870 at $200. No. Way. Only in our dreams.

6850, yes. My guess is its going to be at $250 since it should be faster than the gtx460.

Even if it's $250 MSRP it will be an incredible value (given that it performs as well as a 5870). This card has the potential to be another 8800GT (highest price:performance ratio known to man).

    I'm gonna guess $300-350 for the 5870, $200-250 for the 5850.

I'm pretty sure my 5770's do quad-fire...these cards are the 5770 equivilent of the 6000 series (I like the recent numbers vs price BTW, hopefully power usage is down)...I'm sure there would be people wanting to run three of these instead of say, two high end Cayman cards. (Trifire 5770 has really nice scaling)

There will probably be non reference boards with 2 x-fire bridges and/or other changes too, so i dont really see any reason to be concerned...

Probably. But i dont think they want to restrict people from running tri/quad fire 6870. I think its just a cost issue, saving a few bucks on a simpler board..
But i dont know, just guessing from my side...
