    |UnBoxing|MSI N460GTX HAWK "Talon Attack"

    MSI N460GTX HAWK "Talon Attack"

MSI's GTX 460 HAWK "Talon Attack" is the refinement of earlier released GTX 460 HAWK with faster GDDR5 on board .It can be well overclocked above a reference /nvidia designed GTX 460

    Front

    Back

    IO /2x DVI Ports & a Mini-HDMI Port

2x PCI-Express power adapter & Voltage measurement cables

Driver CD ,Quick Install Guide ,DVI adapter to VGA & Mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter

    All the Goodies here .....

This were it gets interesting ...

The GDDR5 memory chips are made by Hynix, and carry the model number H5GQ1H24AFR-T2C. They are specified to run at 1250 MHz (5000 MHz GDDR5 effective).Personally I was not expecting a highly overclock-able Hynix GDDR5,I was expecting SAMSUNG ... its a surprise.

MSI is using the uP 6213 for their design which seems to have the functionality required to control the three voltages MSI is offering. On the left of the voltage regulator you find a pair of DIP switches that let you optimize the PWM frequency. Near the bottom edge of the PCB MSI has placed six LEDs that show a bar graph of the current draw of the card (amps, representing GPU load).

    GPUz info

Mates U would be thinking ,I should overclock & do some benching

I need more time ,I received it yesterday only & MSI afterburner received with was expired .

    Hope u like Un-Boxing this

    Surprise

    IDLE

    LOAD

Temps are great ,Im loving it

Afterburner 2.1/2.0 ** is buggy... the voltage sometimes is applied & sometimes with the same setting drivers crash

    Default Vantage 811/1622/1950

    Default Voltage OC 850/1700/2240

OCed to max at 1.087v using Afterburner 1.6.1

As its noticed that ,there not difference in in sing AB 1.6.1 or 2.0 or 2.1 * ,the main reason i bought this is its memory .I'm dissapointed ....

    Note:
I have noticed the VRM area getting very hot that too includes memory VRM & an added high speed GDDR5 is still not overclockable to the max ,the Afterburner provided with the card is non functional provided to the " World's First Triple Voltage Control " ...

It may be a software or may be a bios bug ... it needs to be reviewed MSI !!!

Nice Card men, could be possible to get the BIOS of your card for flashing a normal MSI HAWK to this version?

    Thanks

yaa ,did OC was disappointing ,the whole day i was looking for max OCability ... finally made it .Have a look in main post

    Next
Dumping "i2cd" afterburner does show max voltage 1.213 but when u set it like that it sets back to 1.087 ... will max it out with " Fermi Bios Editor "

Lets see if i could touch mysterious 1000MHz ability .....

Why didn't you do any testing with the memory at 1250MHz?

    I like this card already

Bro its not that im limiting memory OCability

the memory is not willing to go above 2240 ,above that drivers fail

U can see all the Vantage scores the memory is always set to 2240

Why are there no photos of the stripped card showing the VRM, onboard power phases etc.. ?

But 2500MHz is "stock" for the memory? Or are you limited by the memory controller? I'm not saying you're stupid, I'm just wondering why it can't run at the memory's rated speed

Im pushing it as much as possible ,it may be related to vmem ... increasing vmem should help reach 2500! .U know AB is the trick ,but it isn't working

Thanks, examined a sample of the GA SOC GTX460 card and GA has also skipped the VRM sink from their new card. But the mounting holes are still there on the PCB and the mosfets are well arranged with no intervening protruding resistors to prevent anyone from adding their own sink - nice!

Looks like GA might be the winner this time round.

No problem though ,I will make it work

950/1100 is not a problem & if it voltmodded may be it could reach 1000/1200

Will this work on normal GTX 460s though, or would it brick them?

Interesting... I ordered a N460GTX Hawk from Newegg when they dropped the price to $214.99 with a $20 rebate and free shipping. The Talon Attack was more and I didn't think it was worth it.

So I get the board and lo and behold it comes with factory clocks of 811 core, 1622 shaders, and 1950 memory. It has the Hynix GDDR5 1250Mhz ram chips and the Device ID in BIOS is 8600. So it is a Talon Attack, even though neither the box nor sticker says it.

Not sure if I just got lucky or if MSI is upgrading all the Hawk cards. I ordered another one for SLI so am hoping it is also a Talon Attack incognito.

If anyone was interested, this card is certainly a good overclocker although a little disappointing based on the 1GHz propaganda, which I suspect was achieved with some cherry picked GF104 silicon. Using Afterburner 2.1 beta which is limited to +100 mV on the core it will go to just over 900MHz. Unigine Heaven 2.1 (DX11, 2560x1600, 16AF, 4x AF, normal Tesselation) will crash before too long if I go beyond that. The memory is good to at least 2200Mhz with the +30 mV the latest Afterburner provides. At 2250 red artefacts appeared so I backed off. I haven't seen any effect from the PLL voltage so have the offset at zero.

Using NiBiTor 5.8 I did unlock the base Vcore from 0.987, and set it to 1.2125v. I used Nvidia Inspector to set the default Vcore to 1.125v which should net 1.2125v with +100 mV in Afterburner (which I understand controls a secondary VRG, which is not reflected in the Vcore reported by the sensor). This got me a little above 950Mhz and temps were still quite reasonable but the gains weren't that significant so I'm leaving well enough alone, and sticking with the 1.087v/900MHz available with Afterburner. Older versions of Afterburner allowed more offset for the Vcore and memory, with +100mV on the GDDR3 I did get 2250 stable.

If anyone is interested, overclocked as above the highest PScore with 3DVantage was about 17,500... not bad for a card with net cost of $195. Other than power used at load, I'm pleased with this purchase and glad I didn't hold out for the AMD Bart boards. Overclocking the 460 1GB to similar speeds as the 6870, I doubt there is much if any difference other than load power. And I prefer nVidia over AMD/ATI for SLI (over CFX), also I prefer nVidia's drivers and control panel.

Good to know some one else bought this too ...........

950 is not bad for this kind of card & if its better cooled I think it can do more than that .... underwater /LN2 ,i will not be doing that

We have to wait for a better AB just +30mv is not enough & i manually vmem'ed so now i can reach 2360 ,my vcore is 0.962

Next with those scores I scored 18363 GPU vantage

    So ur SLI'ng ,gr8 man

And i want u to share ur BIOS ...
