Coming from someone that uses a 480 only for physics this is laughable. Even if you intended it as a joke. You must have more money than brains.

ONLY for Physics? So what do i use for 3D then? It's a SINGLE 480 i have, which does both...

For single gpu cards, yeah it worked out of the box. Both the 4870x2 and 5970 took a while for it to work properly. The delay though can be a good thing is all I am saying.

In the history of graphics cards, it's been extremely rare to see situations in which a card like 5970 could last so long without competition.

And as things are, my guess is it will make it to 2011 without proper competition

He's saying the 8800 GTX went untouched for a very long time... just like the 5970. We all know the 5970 is about 4x as powerful as an 8800 GTX.

G80 was king of the hill war longer than 5970 has been. And 5970 seems to be dethroned shortly. Besides, G80 was a single chip solution. Since G80 no one has been able to produce a single chip even close to that dominance.

G80 was released november 2006. And wasn't beat by any graphics card until early 2008 when HD3870 X2 was released. And the first chips to outperform G80 was RV770 and GT200 in mid 2008.

mate I am talking about stuff on a single PCB. back then having 2 gpus on a single pcb was not feasible (until 3870), so I'd say that comment does not belong...

5970 has been out 10 months now, with very poor availability the first time. Still not even close to G80.

don't get me wrong G80 was possibly one of those things you don't see often on a market so fierce. Where innovation and excellence is the driving force, in fact I think that the GPU design has reached such a point, that I doubt we will see something take the #1 spot for as long as the G80 did.

Now back onto topic.... where's that HD6000 for the love of Hardware

why facepalm?? maybe I put my message across using the incorrect words. when 5970 came out, the gap that it created between itself and other cards was bigger in comparison to what G80 achieved (speaking on comparational quantitative ratios) cards was immense. that's what I was referring to.

BTW I have owned both cards plus a dozen more in the last 24 months, and OC'ed some of them to breaking point

    G80 overclocked really good

Cypress x 2 was simply on an entirely different level of oc capability

what about the 3870x2? i cant recall what was out back in those days, but the 3870 was TINY.

i never really care about whos on top, cause perf per watt and perf per $ is what i like to look at. i guess people who buy 8800ultras also buy 2000$ 1TB SSD drives

Hmm.... I think that logic would only work if it was nVidia who had a dual GPU card on the market currently that is being b*tch slapped, dominated, and thoroughly kicked around by a SINGLE GPU card from ATi.

The 8800gtx when it was released in 2006 was roughly 4x faster than any single GPU ATi card on the market, and most reviews went with comparing ATi's X1950 XTX in crossfire to a single 8800gtx in an attempt to make ATi look like less of a joke.

In the 3 reviews I just glanced over from 2006, none of them actually compared 2x 8800gtx in SLI with the crossfire x1950 XTX cards in an apples to apples comparison when the card was definitely capable of 2x SLI and even 3x SLI.

I guess the reviewers were perhaps experiencing some bias after the previous 6 months of parading around with their favorite ATi cards, but were stopped mid stride by big green. hehe. I guess things never change.
