had the same issue on my first board. temps even reached 100C after a few minutes in bios and the board shut itself down!

replaced the tim brought temps down to about 50C. figured out later, one of the dimm slots was dead so i had the board to rma anyway ...

second board was in the 50C range from the beginning.

as i'm not the first reporting this, there is obviously an issue with tim on some boards.

    1) replace the stock IOH heatsink with optional one
    2) clean the paste and apply as5
    3) if your case take side fans push fresh air directry to IOH and ICH

With ambient around 23c you must have ~40c on ICH/IOH

^^ What have you been able to manage for max oc on your 960? I put mine in last night because of my bclk limitation with the board, but even with the 25multi my chip sucks.

23x192 (4400+) with ht on and 1.42 vcore is the max i can do with this chip.
    Always with my corsair h50.

    CPU 4.523Ghz
    DDR 1725Mhz 6-8-6-20
    CPUv 1.437
    PLL 1.88
    QPI 1.45

Hope this helps out anyone else looking to hit 4.5 on air. As you'd expect, temps are high maxing out in the low 90s in IntelBurn. Superpi is 9.0, compared to 9.7s at 4.2Ghz/2000Mhz. Thanks again donmarkoni and others for your help!

THIS IS A MOTHERBOARD thread, Rampage Extreme III not a CPU board where u brag how much u got from your cpu.
ANY board can do 215BCLK, ANY!
Well okey, except some udderly bad boards that can do only 205-210.

Most arent doing what you would consider good because the board combined with bloomfield for many=fail at anything over 215-220bclk without the use of slowmode. Higher bclk for most users I have seen requires slowmode to be enabled, which for a 24/7 rig and any 3D sucks. People still post about how great it is but everytime I read to catch up on whats going on in the thread I leave thinking "WTF am I missing, why are they still praising this pathetic board"? Im not knocking anyone that has 4500stable, thats a very good 24/7 oc by anyones standard but I would give more credit to the chip and the guy clocking it than to this board. That can be accomplished on many lower priced boards.

    zpaf...some questions:

    1. Is the fan noisy? Really dont want to spoil the PC by adding a noisy fan
    2. Clean TIM...not an option. Simply dont have the time to do it...plus if I did do it I dont think I could help but get the EK mobo WB instead and build a dedicated WCing loop for it while I am at it. I dont want upgrade anything in the PC at the moment, just built it recently and need to spend time using rather than improving it right now.
    3. Case is TJ07. Air flow is not great. I have a HDD enclosure pushing air through the front to back. Also have rear 92mm's and roof 120mm fans all pushing air. No direct air flow over the mobo though. Any advice on how to go about improving air flow?

I am thinking that if I can add the optional fan on without undoing the whole mobo then I'll give that a go and see how it sounds. If it reduces the temps then great. If the fan is noisy then I am thinking that an ugly but effective solution could be antec spot cool fans. If the optional fan is good but not good enough then adding the ugly spot fans will further reduce the temps while avoiding a complete re-build (something that only a mobo/cpu failure will make me do...touch wood...crosses fingers...prays to the hw gods for mercy...er...).

    Any advice would greatly appreciated

have not used the optional fan myself but have read its rather loud. so if noise is an issue and you would like to bring temps down a bit i would instead undervolt a 120mm fan and point it directly in the direction of the ioh/ich heatsink.

but my advice is: if you dont have any problems, and i doubt you will have any, just leave it as it is! your temps are higher as normal but still within operating specs of intel, so what.

Hate to break it to you man, but very few Bloomfield chips are stable above ~4.4GHz without subzero cooling. The motherboard has little to nothing to do with that.

Where this board does shine is for CPU-Z, SuperPi, and WPrime as it can go past any other board with QPI Slow Mode enabled.

If anything, it sounds like you've come in here to show off your 5.1GHz overclock. I only run my W3520 at 4.2GHz... Beat my benching clocks and then you can brag. Until then, it would be wonderful if you'd stop demonstrating to everyone how easy it is to be an ass on the internet.

fgw...I had a feeling it would be. I like the idea of 120mm fan...something like a 1200-2000rpm 120mm fan (one or two) sounds good. Question is how I hold them in place? I dont have a heatsink I can hand it off of. Anyone with any ideas? Antec spot cool is looking increasing like something I might have to go with...which will mean I will need to install the fan controller I've been holding off installing as I'll end up spending ages sorting on niggling things that have been getting to me (few messy cables...more UV lighting...move around the LEDs to under mobo tray, re-cable all the fans from 7v to 12v at full RPM (at max the fans are really quite as well...should of thought of this before).

what is on the 970 and 980X probes cores are bugged?

CPU temp is higher than those of cores, and the temperatures of the cores is lower than the ambient temperature or that of water (WC)

    I Used bios 0011

    thanks

    I picked up a second i7 930 from newegg. FPO/Batch #: 3012A752 (pack date 7/07/10). On my R3E it wouldn't do more than 3.82GHz at 191BCLK.

My first i7 930 does 4.37GHz at 230BCLK on the R3E, but I run it at 4.2GHz with a 200BCLK for daily use to keep temps under control.
