So, I'm experiencing an odd problem. I found settings that are stable for 5 instances of IBT at maximum memory usage (x64) and work fine when running HyperPi 32M using 8 cores. However, some games (GTA 4 and Left 4 Dead 2 in particular) crash after about 30 seconds. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Just for clarification, the games crash to desktop - the machine does not lock or BSOD. I get no other error message other than the standard "such-and-such has stopped responding yadda yadda." The machine works fine after that other than looping audio.

i find that 3d stressing is much harsher than pi testing, yet prime 95 stresses very well too. other than that i have no clue other than 3d errors caused by the oc. did you push up the pci-e bus?

One thing that is odd, the BIOS wants to set my uncore multi really high - x19, so I tried bumping it a bit and an uncore of x17 seems to actually help a lot. I tried x18 with IOH at 1.3, but no dice. I've left it at x17 for now. Also, keep in mind this is a C0, not D0 CPU.

I raised the vcore a few notches to 1.425 and it runs through 10 instances of IBT with maximum memory usage just fine and ran through 16-core 32M in Hyper Pi twice, one after another, and yet it still crashes after a few seconds in some games. I've never had a machine do this before - pass much more intensive stress tests just fine and yet be completely unstable in a game.

looks and sounds like it be gpu/driver problem maybe. Try running some other games or 3dmark vantage and see what it does.

I thought that too, but it works fine at stock. Also, I lowered the CPU multi from 20 to 19 ( for 3.8GHz) and it works fine. So, it's definitely related to the overclock, it's just weird to me that a game like GTA would be a better indicator of stability than Hyper Pi and IBT.

If lowering Cpu multi from 20 to 19 stopped it from crashing in game then then would mean you need more Vcore. The only other thing I saw in your settings was
Are you sure you need them set like that? I over looked it before as you said you have a C0 chip not a D0 chip.Advanced Clock Control:

Yes, that was what I took from the situation, as well. At least I've found that raising the uncore multi from 16 to 17 and raising the IOH Core to 1.18v allowed me to reduce the QPI/VTT and CPU PLL voltages. They're working great at 1.32v and 1.8v, respectively.
I'm marginally happy with the overclock at the moment - I may try for the 20 multiplier again and just see how far I have to push the vcore.
Well, those settings have worked for me in the past - helped stabilize an overclock. So I gave them a shot, and they don't seem to impact performance much. The C0's do take extra fiddling - the early ones, especially (this is a week 38 CPU - one of the early batches). I will probably set them back to normal at some point to see if this OC is stable without.

Try those settings. for my cpu that is too much vcore and vtt for those settings. If you can boot and is stable lower those as low as you can.

Have you been messing with your ram by any chance ? Try to loosen the timing on your ram and see what happens.. Maybe apply a bit more vtt , disable turbo performance and any c states and/or speedstep .. See what happens .. Try using odd numbers on the blck?

Try to set ALL voltages except vCore and vDRAM on AUTO for the first time. If it boots than you have to set another value for some of the voltages (probably VTT). If it doesn't boot thank try with other memory divider and other timings. Performance Enhance put on Normal. For 24/7 Expert mode doesn't mean anything. Those modes set up the memory sub-timings lower and gives boost only in Everest memory benchmark so "relax" your memory. CPU PLL voltage "have" to be on 1.8v. When you on air it's better to set it at 1.7-1.8v but when you go on subzero cooling than is good.
I remembered when i had my stock cooler i had some trouble with the memories so what i did was intead of giving the emories 8-8-8 24 i have it 9-9-9 24 and it booted perfectly so at the moment i have this:

Yup , you have to find the sweet spot for the memory and the OC on the CPU , just gotta balance it all out .with what you have now it looks great!! If your gonna up your CPU OC def gonna need more vcore and more vtt , but watCh your mem as well .. Adjust in small doses and run LinX for 20 passes for stability
