NOob PSU Question

hey guys,
Just wiring up a ST1500 psu and ...

First of all, i have always plugged my units into surge protection power strips, etc. However, this guide recommends directly hooking it into a wall socket. as a matter of fact they are quite adamant about it. so have i been wrong the whole time? or is it just that the PSU has evolved to where they have some type of internal protection?
