Windows Vista remind me Windows ME
Unless you need trim support, you'd be wasting a good mature OS for one that still acts as if its in beta. I've been using Win7 x64 ultimate since launch and RC long before that and can personally say its still far from finished. It has many quirks you will not have to put up with in Vista or XP.
I use both. I have Win7 x64 on my desktop, Vista x32 on my laptop (it only has 2GB RAM, and previously had only a 32bit CPU until I upgraded it). While I don't have a real problem with Vista, I like 7 better. I don't really have any real quirks to speak of with either OS, and 7 doesn't act beta at all
Now, other people, yeah... I've run into some dumb Vista glitches on other machines, but also dumb XP glitches too. Not so many dumb 7 glitches but most computers that come into the shop are XP, some Vista, and only a couple 7 machines.

I still think it's funny when people ranted and raved about performance of XP over Vista. I installed XP on a P133 system for fun like no kidding your going to see good performance on a OS like that.
i3 2100, MSI H61M-E33. 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws.
MSI GTX 460 Twin Frozr II. 1TB Caviar Blue.
Corsair HX 620, CM 690, Win 7 Ultimate 64bit.
One of the most common on is that in my signature. For whatever reason windows 7 cannot call up its installer for this or that program. The file have not been harassed in any way. Sure you can usually track it down with the browse button, but this is a tedium and annoyance I have NEVER EVER encountered in windows before.
Also another one that, while not having a known cause is the shutdown hang when windows7 cannot call up (default, whatever) shutdown music. This one is common as piss, happening on Laptops and SSD powered madmachines alike with fresh unaltered installs. The OS is soo stupid it will just hand their indefinitely with the computer on full tick unable to shut down or go to sleep. People say you can 'fix' it with a new audio file, but in my experience it makes no difference. Just another annoyance to click off I've never encountered on other operating systems.
I've also had it loose its start button, its kinda rare though. What isnt is rare though is how the UI is still tedium, without using search/run and a plethora of shortcuts it takes far to long to pathfind through directories. The OS still takes its sweet time to boot too, my Agility is only ever 40-50% full and has working trim support with no degradation. Its not as slow as vista, but even with an SSD its still slow enough that you will want to just keep it in sleep rather than shut down. Also it doesn't seem to handled lots of hard drives and multitasking as well, i just generally find myself waiting for many things that were instant on vista.
There are improvements over vista, such as its handling of audio functions and Trim support .. but besides that they are far to few between to warrant anyone with Vista X64 to upgrade at the moment. And It is still rough, Vista for all its faults did feel polished and unflappable next to the easily flustered Windows 7.
I've never seen this issue, but then we're only running Win7 on three machines here. You sound like you're handling more installs on a regular basis.
Again, I've never seen this happen either.
I've had the start button go too, if you've not already done it, you can get the start button back by making it run 'Explorer' on the task manager.
Boot times can't really help you, Win7 likes to preload (like vista), people say Win7 is fast on slower machines and that's likely because it's not trying to do the same stuff on them. On a fast machine Win7 is only slightly faster than Vista.
In a multi hard drive set up it will turn off the inactive hard drives. If it's annoying you, you'll have to configure them to always on in advanced power settings.
I agree that Vista64 is still a very solid platform, but lets face it Win7 is very pretty. Also with a load of old XP users deciding it's a good time to upgrade (a big chunk of Win7's growth is from XP users if that graph is accurate) I think it's just nice to have most Win7 adopters using the 64bit option over the 32bit.
99% of people using Vista or Win7 have very little if any problems. I'm one of them. Can't say more really. Yea there are some little annoyances, but all of mine can be fixed. It's more interface related, I want it like Vista, and I still can. No problem. No performance problems either. Nice and snappy.

likely do to the fact that they are all raid and perhaps win7 is afraid to put them in standby, I just keep a bunch of TB drives for storage and file management. I'll try to disable drive sleep like Iconyu said, but theres a good chance I already did as first thing I tend to shut off are power saving features.
My problem with windows 7 is all the hype and how people eat it up, when truthfully it feels like just a service pack for that evil -hisss- OS vista, some things improved, some things worse than before.

what did you find to be worse?
I'm scratching my head here... NEVER had it unable to find its installer, or forget where its shutdown sound is, or have the start button disappear....
I think 7 could boot faster if they had it loading while the pretty logo is doing its animation thing, instead of just sitting idle until it is almost through, but other than that it seems to boot decently quick (I'm not on a SSD). I have 3 hard drives and don't have any issues with them...

hmm... things are so slow with a SSD, boot times so slow that you just put it sleep vs shut down.
Maybe its just me and my slow MTRON Pros but the dif is night and day vs HD's. Even with Vista which I started using my SSD Raid 0 on.
I have 3 external HD's, 1 USB3 drive, and have no problems what so every with slow downs.
Multi Tasking is a dream with games, software etc all open at the same time in window mode and switching is instant. Yes I run 12gbs of RAM but it was the same with only 6gb insalled.
My rig is based on the 7x 32gb MTRON SSD's in Raid 0, plus all the drives I listed, SQL installed, WHS Home Server it connects to on startup, plus another game server that all gets connected with RADMIN. Its also only a 975ex with a V8 air cooler @ 3.8ghz
I wait for nothing in this setup, even while FFIV is running, or 2 copies of Aion.
I have no idea why your system is so slow with a SSD but maybe worth while looking into that. Even with 1 MTRON SSD used as a boot drive systems here are night and day vs a HD.
I use Win 7 64x a lot and like it, no more do I need to install and pop in a driver disk and do all that, it handles it all for me. After install I just download Nvidia drivers and no reboot needed. Installs go much faster.
The only thing I need for my main rig is a USB with the ARC-1231ML drivers needed to set it up on install.
Win 7 is not perfect, nor was Vista but now I find XP just getting left in the dust with what Win 7 brings to the table. I mean XP is what almost 15 years old.
I guess its all a matter of personal preferance. My friend likes the explorer view for file directories, I do not.
I all most never use search because I pretty much know where everything is and have to wonder why people need to search so often to find stuff.
Wow, I never really had problems with either OS, and I have computers in my house running:
Windows 2000
Windows XP 32
Windows XP 64
Windows Vista 64
Windows Server 2008 32
Windows 7 64...
Out of all of those I still prefer my Windows 2000... (I mean its XP with an ugly face...)
And second choice is XP x64.(Server 2003...)

This might not be a poplularity issue but an OEM thing. I checked the desktop PC section of Newegg and found that of the ~375 desktop computers they had for sale only ~30-35 had a 32 bit OS on them. All the rest appeared to be 64 bit (most of those W7 HP). If OEM's only offer 64 bit systems, consumers can only buy 64 bit systems.![]()
