Maybe we should suggest that the ability to "retire" accounts be added to WCG?

I dont mean to make them unable to have points added to them anymore, but more of placed in a category of honor..

RAW-Raptor22: Why is there a password to fold on one account?
Same reason that you need a password here, eg if just anyone could log in as you, they could do antisocial things anonymously & leave you to take the rap.

BTW, WCG is not just folding ... it's for any researchers with a project that can be deemed to be of benefit to humanity, and where the results will be placed in the public domain. Medical research, solar cell technology, food crop genetics, climate and environmental science, ..., ..., ... Got a project like that? You're in!

Aside from the HPF2 project, WCG doesn't fold at all. We process simulations on a different basis entirely. That's why we use the term "crunching".

The project forum and account settings are all accessed by the same username/password, so there is a real trust issue in giving these details out.

Personally I would suggest for an exercise like this that we all agree for one and ONLY one person to access the account settings. Every/anyone else should commit to touch nothing but their own local hardware. Not account settings, not device profiles, in fact nothing on the WCG site AT ALL. Just and ONLY their own local settings on a per machine basis.

Pardon me but isn't this kinda the same thing as Andre Yang helping others with OC scores?

I understand this isn't a competition (well saying that you all take pride in your worldwide folding positions) but surely having a dead guys account rocket up the leaderboards is a bit wack? I mean in time guys will be nugged down a place (or more) by a dead guys account with others folding on it. If many people were to do this no-one would have a clue what position anyone really holds since every second account would be fake essentially.

I understand loonym was very well liked and respected around here but to continually fold under HIS name and push his account artificially high imo is no way to remember him.

I mean if the guy was really into folding then why not make up a new XS-LOONYM-REMEMBERENCE account and let people add any folding power they can to it as and when permitted. This would be much more respectful since it would instantly portray the level of respect and admiration he was shown from the community here at XS and how much he is sorely missed. It would also show the level of maturity here at XS and the bond which exists between some of it's members.

You haven't been here long enough to understand

And no, this is nothing like what Andre did. This isn't a competition, there are no prizes and definitely no money at stake. No place on some world record hall of fame database. Nothing. Sure there's a position, but if that's the only reason you crunch you really need to reconsider the benefits involved

I'd say that we might look at this situation differently (@Thomo). Positions are fun but as long as the work is getting done is all that matters. Crunching under Jon's name isn't to boost his rank but it is a way of tribute. (to me at least)
I don't want to see his name fall off of the charts because that might seem like he's being forgotten. He enjoyed crunching; he enjoyed this community. I see nothing wrong with the community wanting to crunch for him. I respect him greatly.

But, opinions differ and that's how the world is. Not saying you're wrong.. just stating my way of thinking about it.

We aren't sharing or trading exclusive scores. We are "competing" in something that, honestly, doesn't matter who's #1 and who's #1,000,000. Neither us nor Jon would be rewarded with anything monetary, but it would keep his account from falling through the ranks. TO be honest, I hope that, in a decade, his daughter comes looking for information about her late father, and sees this site and, more specifically, this section.

1 - We don't fold. If you want to fold go to Folding@Home. We crunch. Yes there is a difference. Not just in terminology but in the technology, function of the applications and even the very concept of what we're doing.

2 - Since the user scores and leader boards are artificial constructs anyway, either method of paying our respects will work. It's about putting remembrance into action, not being politically correct.

2 - I would suggest in the strongest possible terms that using the term "dead guy" not happen again in this thread or any other in this section in this context. We're talking about a highly respected person whom many here knew, not some anonymous "Mr Doe".

I googled his name and sure enough there at the top of the tree was our friend.... I would like to think that we can remember him in a number of different ways, this being a great idea of Dave's and that when the time comes it will be just as easy for Annabelle to find out what a great guy he was.

Come December/January time I would hope we could have a mass effort on his behalf as suggested here or at the very least in his memory

I could have liked the suggestion of making an another account to remember Jon but not from someone who calls him a dead guy as D_A mentioned

My personal suggestion is to have a "Sticky" created where we can share stories and remembrances of Jon. This way he will be with us all daily and not just on a chart that some may never see. He loved the work and the fellowship, and a "Top Sticky" IMHO would be a great way to honor him and keep him in our thoughts.

And YES, no more talk about "The Dead Guy", Jon was a caring father and was taken way before his time. He is one of the reasons that all of my machines Krunch ONLY Cancer.

And I do like the idea of Retiring his account and capturing it to display in "The Stick" to highlight how fast and how hard he worked to achieve it.

Seen this and just had to stop by and pay my respects as I was not able to be here when the time was right. Very nice Cause david. iIt's important to me, and others to not forget about the sunshine and goodness these people brought to our lives and what they gave in any capacity for good.

I always loved chatting with him, he was funny as all hell at times, yet didn't put up with any slack and was just overall a bright soul. And common who dosn't love his avatar hmm? Every time I'd see his avi I'd have to have a chuckle.

Mis you Jon, live on my brother your stats and memory of what you contributed every day won't be soon forgoten.

Well done mate. I merely said that in the context of what "others" around the world might say when they realise where all the points are derived from. I realise many users do check these kinda things and no doubt didn't know/won't know who Loonym was. But yes well done on flying in every ready to jump at slightest oppertunity to misinterperate something for the sake of looking all protective and loyal.

This is so painfully childish I'll give it the response it deserves.

Here's where I'll step into keep this from going down into the gutter.
The idea was to add some machines and keepJon's name and account up where it was when he "passed"

As to the "dead guy" comment,it's factual but a little cold to us that knew him so better to use the term "passed on"..

Bottom line is this is just a way to say that Jon is still in our thoughts.

To all,no bashing in this thread ok.
REALLY takes away from the spirit of the thread.

If that line on another computer for $350 shipped comes through, I'll have a second system plus enough spare parts to really get a 3rd running for <$100. At least one of my computers will be on Jon's account, even if it's just the E6300.
