    Black Inside My Blocks........gaww.......

so recently glanced at my mosfet block and saw it was pretty dark and so i decided to look inside my other blocks as they are lower i need a flashlight to see the insides.. and the "darkness" as it were.

NO COOLANTS WERE USED IN THIS. JUST DISTILLED AND 2 KILL COILS.

    effect temps?

wtf.. it doesnt look very thick.

I believe this just happens over time. Nothing an overnight soak in coca-cola can't clean.

My Apogee XT had something similar happen, not too bad tho, the rest are nickel plated EK blocks.

This is a result of copper reacting with oxygen in the water. It's a natural process and the layer acts as a form of protection to the copper beneath. You can choose to clean it but it will come back in time. It does not affect performance in temps.

this is what happens when you use a kill coil instead of ethylene glycol

There are still oxygen in water when add ethylene glykol ? and thermal wise pure water transports heat better than ethylene glykol and black surface on Cu doesn't make it worse

I hope this is sarcasm... now that i reread it..

Because if its not sarcasm... continue...
why does a kill coil turn copper black?
Please tell us why? Copper and silvers reactivity is so low, that it would take 100 yrs for him to even start seeing corrosion on copper + silver.
So tell me WHY antifreeze is the answer to all? Because antifreeze is honestly CRAP.

I can tell you what Ethyl Glycol does, it clumps til no tomorrow if your using a block with slit injectors, like 80% of all the blocks out now.

And when it clumps, it clogs, and it looks like mystery jelly.

And the reason why they use it in cars and not computers now, is because in cars you dont have slit injectors which is fed antifreeze.

So b4 you say something really uneducated like this, support your evidence with facts.

Ignore him. It has nothing to do with you adding ethyl glycol.
What probably happened is you had a increase rate of oxidation.
That is what that black color is, and no amount of antifreeze would prevent that, as its more related to bubbles.
And antifreeze for one causes MORE BUBBLES.

Another thing it can be is pH. If for some reason your pH in your water dropped to acidic levels.
Overtime your blocks will turn black.

I think it could be the distilled turning slightly acidic after reacting to something unknown in your tubing or rad.

    1. Wrong question. Its not about what the killcoil does, its about what it does NOT! its not an corrosion inhibitor.

    2. I've never had gunk in my watercoolers, and i've been using Ethylene glycol for over 8 years now. its all about dosage, you know

    3. Made my day... pls think about this the next time you post something like that:

But it keeps your copper nice and pretty! And you don't need to use a whole lot of eth glycol. Maybe like a 5% solution? Your coolant is still mostly water.

    ROFL...

    Hydrx = Mystery jelly X
Feser One = Mystery Jelly X.

And ive H2o'd for over 10yrs, and seen enough mystery jelly X to know where it came from. How about you do a search on it.
Type in Mystery Jelly X, and see how many hits you get.

We called it mystery jelly X because we first starting seeing it mostly from HydrX

    Corrosion inhibitor FOR WHAT?
    What is going to corrode?
Silver + Copper? Shall i put it inside a cup for you and put current to show you how rediculously slow it happens?
Is he mixing ALU? Why do you need a corrosion inhibitor when your not mixing galvanic metals in the same loop under an active current?

    3. Want to bash water with me? Im game, as theres only less then a handful of people on this forum where i can honestly say know more then me, and even less with the amount of toys in water that i have had.

i suspect people who complain about hydrx clogging up their blocks use pure hydrx. but it might be the dye, actually (I haven't used hydrx myself, but it seems to be just eth glycol + green dye)

You are talking about different things. Dr. Joe is talking about using Ethylene glycol (diluded in water, obviously; and I understand he is using a really low dosage) and you are talking about two compounds causing clothing but not talking about Ethylene glycol...

wtf do you guys think hydrx is?

Wtf do you guys think pentosin is?

What do you think prestone is? Oh wait that might be proply glycol.

OMG the people in this thread.

I give up, fine, if you think its silver go ahead and blame the silver.
You have red plauge corrosion, which is one of the only types of corrosion you can get between copper and silver, and that happen when you try to plate silver over copper improperly.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_plague_%28corrosion%29

Anyhow im done in this thread...

Lastly u need at least a 40/60 or greater mix of etyl glycol to work as a corrosion inhibitor.
Or you add something called water wetter.

But i think you guys already knew that, since all of you know more about water then i do.

Does your res have any vortex problems as in continuously sucking air back into the pump and water?

Just curious if that sort of condition might create a higher than normal oxygen level stimulating the reaction.

I've been running straight distilled with PTnuke on the same fill for over a year now and don't see any oxidation on my DD MPC chipsets although I haven't taken apart my supreme yet. Regardless a little ketchup and a toothbrush will take care of that in no time...
