Now that prices have come down a bit, I'm starting to think about getting a second CPU and using it with 8GB DIMMs. It shouldn't be a problem to mix 8GB DIMMs on one CPU with 4GB DIMMs on the other CPU, right? Both would be dual-rank, 1333, ECC, registered.

I'm using 3x2GB ECC-unbuffered on one CPU + 3x2GB non-ECC on the other one, and it has been behaving fine so far. I don't know how your DIMMs will do, but it doesn't seams to be picky on mixing different RAMs on 2 CPUs.

What's a reasonably safe max temperature for the CPU PWM? Mine is showing 85C in eLeet when running Linx, before OC.

That's a nasty one, it gets really hot without active cooling. But it is rated for high-temp, MAX 96'C (if i remember right). But that's the absolute MAX that would kill the chip, and it is good idea to keep it cooler. I'm using a moded Intel i7 stock fan on reduced speed, and it is keeping under 65'C, quietly.

Where did you mount the fan? It's a pretty tight fit in that area in the Lian-Li PC-P80.

There is space right on top of, at least in my little SilverStone FT01, but it is a tight fit. You need a small fan and that's why I've used a moded Intel's stock i7 cooler. I had to cut 3 legs, and trim the last one to hock behind the MB, it is still hanging in there .

I've also tried another option which works fine. If I mount my Noctua NH-D14 vertically (blowing top-down), then the top of the cooler stays right in line with the PWM cooler. Then I can mount the 140mm fan on top and push it backward to blow right on PWM. It worked fine for me, and keeps almost the same temp.

Hello, my SR-2 arrived today, I have one more question, can connect processors together different model?

    I have 2x (X5550) and 1x (X5650), i wanted to put an x5550 with a x5650, does it works?

    anyone ever tried?

    thanks for the help

I've noticed that the CPU0 PWM temperature reading seems to bounce around quite a bit when the system is under load (such as with Linx). It can jump from 50 to 80 and then back to 50. The amount of jumping seems to decrease the longer the load is applied, but it drops to the lower number and stays there within a few seconds after the load is removed.

Has anyone else seen similar behavior? Any idea what might be happening? Should I believe the higher number?

The EVGA FAQ for this board shows these for CPU support:

Due to the chipset, ONLY Dual Xeon QPI processors will work.

    Intel Xeon E5620
    Intel Xeon E5540
    Intel Xeon X5650
    Intel Xeon X5680
    Intel Xeon X5667
    Intel Xeon X5677
    Intel Xeon X5550
Can anyone confirm any other (cheaper) CPU's? I want to get an SR-2, but need to ease into it for cash-flow reasons

^^ E5620 is the cheapest one, but the max BCLK on SR-2 is pretty limited and you shouldn't expect a killer OC out of it. This may change with better BIOS later, but as it is you should get a CPU with higher multi.

Anybody heard and talks or toughs about a new BIOS, anyways?

That list looks incomplete, any socket 1366 E, L, or X xeon (dual QPI) should work. Only the W series Xeon's are single QPI. Unfortunately dual QPI Xeon's and cheap don't belong in the same sentence

E5620's ought to be the cheapest thing worth run on an SR-s at ~$380 per chip. Their low multiplier will limit OC's 17 x 200 roughly.

*edit: check ark.intel.com and the cheapest Dual QPI 1366 is the E5502 or E5503, but at 2c/2t why bother?

Yeah, I understand the chips are not cheap. The list is pretty small though, and it seems as though there should be more CPU's listed.

Finally the AX1200 arrived, and I could squeezed it in that little case too It is the same size as the good old HX1000 tho.

E-LEET is reporting the 12v line as 12.26v at idle and 12.18v under Prime load for AX1200. But it stayed stable under the whole short Prime-run that I've tried. 5v is staying at 4.96v.
I've been getting 12.11v for both idle and load with HX1000, but it could drop to 12.05 sometimes.

AX1200 at top, and and HX1000 under, at idle, both with optional 6-pin CPU-connections connected:

I have to test more to see how stable the lines are, but it is running quiet and seams to be doing good so far. So far so good.

Sorry, I don't EVGA, but I saw that you were talking about uncor blocked

I have E5640 (rev B1) and a R3E and impossible to boot with more ram to 1600MhZ

I tried everything, different settings, etc. ...
all parameters in AUTO and ram to 2000, uncor 3000 to 4000, different vQPI and nothing, it gets stuck at boot (before the bios)

is that it'll be the bios of the motherboard which restricts the frequency? (I know it's a CPU dual QPI but with Rampage II Extreme, no problem with the Xeon E5600)

    if somebody have any idea

    thanks
    Sorry for my english

New cooling arrangement, still inside the little SilverStone Fortress FT01 ATX case

I've moved the 180mm intake fan to the front, and now using a 120mm at top as exhaust. In this way it pushes all hot air to the top and rear.
The new cooling arrangement has shaved quiet a few degrees on system and ststem2 CPU-temp are the same tho.
