ok well i still can't get the board to post. i tried removing the battery for 2 days, using one stick of ram in all the ram slots, the pci-e video card, a pci ati rage xl video card, swap the cpu, reseat the cpu, swap psu. is it even possible to post with only one cpu when it's meant to be used in multiple-processor systems?

i'm using cpu0 socket and tried one stick of ram situated on all of the cpu0dimm slots.

    Do you have the memory in CPU0_DIMM0, CPU0_DIMM1, CPU0_DIMM2 and CPU0_DIMM3 or CPU0_DIMM0, CPU1_DIMM0, CPU2_DIMM0 and CPU3_DIMM0?

only in the cpu0 dimm0-3 slots. i tried 4 sticks in cpu0 dimm0-3 and i also tried just one stick at a time.

From what I've read, you need memory in DIMM0 for each CPU.

I found this and had it saved. Might be helpful...

How to get the board working.
    .
    You need:
    - 4x ecc reg ddr2 sticks inserted in CPU0_DIMM1~4
    - 4 x 8346HE, 8356 CPU (that we know so far, my guess is newer won't work)
    - Any single-slot backplate video card, or any dual-slot card with the end cut off (the second slot is over the power button, removing the power buttons caps should work too)
    - sata dvd drive connected to SATA20 OR usb boot "acpi" drive.
    - sata hard drive connected anywhere else.
    - Power supply with a few 8-pins EPS or pcie connectors, or adapters (you need a total of to fill 8x2 and 7x2 pin)
    - Jumper the power supply ON (green wire to any black ground wire)
    - OS with 16-core support. Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64 for example.

    Step 1
You need to fill CPU0, and CPU0_DIMM1~4 to boot.
To install 8 sticks fill CPU0_DIMM1~4 and CPU1_DIMM1~4.
Fill the two power connectors, leaving the 4 pins on the right empty. You can use PCIE connectors if you connect them backwards or molex-eps adapters.

    Step 2

During installation, hold DEL. Go to boot option, change Priority 1 for "DVD-ROM" or "THUMBDRIVE USB", Save and Exit.
*When installing Linux enter noacpi before installation. (Ubuntu, press F6 and check "acpi=off")
*Haven't tried installing windows7/server you might need to use the shell.

    Step 3
Shutdown. Connect the hard drive in SATA20. Power up, hold DEL, change "Hard drive Priority BBS" to "HARD DRIVE xxxgb". Change Boot Priority 1 for "HARD DRIVE xxxgb", Save and Exit.
The OS should start, if not recheck acpi settings in bios/installer.

    Step 4
If you're using Ubuntu, update the OS and enable sensors with "sudo apt-get install lm-sensors". Install GKrellM System Monitor, System Profiler to see reported temps. Install Cpu Frequency Monitor to force the CPU at full speed for benchmarks.

it's gets hot and needs at least some minor airflow

if you are positive that your ram is ok then it sounds like your board went bad from shipping. pm me and lets see if we can get it taken care of by the seller.

lol only half of what you said i can confirm as true. one cpu in cpu0 and four rams in dimm0 1~4. but i know one ram for each cpu is not true.

i just noticed that the chipset heatsink is REALLY hot, is that normal or something wrong? i guess if that's normal then the board must messed up somehow. but tbh i don't have any way to know for sure if the ram is good, since it's from ebay and i don't have any other systems that use this kind of ram.

    So by "dimm0 1~4" you don't mean DIMM0 of CPU0 to CPU3?

Remainder of the parts I need are ordered. The nuisance stuff. Tubing, clamps, barbs... all the little things. Which sure add up, I went above my budget for this but oh well.

Now I need to design/build the "chassis" I'm going to put all this stuff into.

it gets very hot and needs some air over it.nope. maybe you should send the board back to me or tomorrow i can email the seller and see if he will accept it back from you and send you a new one. whichever you want. i just find it hard to believe that something else isn't going on because, like i've said, i tested each board before i shipped it.

each cpu has it's own four dimm slots. so cpu0 has dimm0 1~4, cpu1 has dimm1 1~4, etc. that's how they're labeled, hope that's clearer.

Got my board in yesterday, thanks Shoota! Oddball question, will a single 2214 boot this board? Would be nice to test all my junk before I bought the CPUs.

Hi there,I have both an Arima Quad and work daily on an Arima NM461 dual socket F.
Original Arima heatsinks heat a lot comparing to other mobos.
The north bridge needs active cooling with a fan.Look at the complete ebay arima quad server and you will see a fan blowing air directly on the northbridge heatsink .
Personally i have upgraded to a Xigmatek Porter N881 HDT northbridge heatsink with great results.

Found this while scouting ebay. That and some of this ram comes to nearly $800.

Still a pretty bum deal isn't it? It's just that $800 is ~500 ish quid which is around what it'd cost to build an I7 860

A bit gutted I missed the boat on this one
