It's well documented that BOTH nVidia and ATi had low yields due to process complications with TSMC's FAB. The vast majority of .40nm production problems at TSMC were during the second half of 2009, and if you recall.... nVidia wasn't mass producing Fermi chips yet. Those 6 months of horrible yields were why HD5xxx cards were almost non-existent until around December. The two stores near where I live which carry high end cards, Microcenter and Fry's Electronics didn't get a single HD5870 until late Nov 2009, some 5 months after release.

And contrary to Charlie's grand predictions pertaining to "incredibly low availability" of GTX480 and 470... both Fry's and Microcenter had these cards stocked, as did almost every e-tailer. I asked one of the sales guys at MIcrocenter about sales and he said customers are buying nV cards over ATi cards by at least a 10:1 margin.

How about a full GF104x2, with 8 clusters and 48 shaders, also 384x2 with full memory?

Maybe they need a bit time to get there and that's why they are not releasing it now? I don't see why they should wait otherwise.
EDIT: If they wanted a double-GPU based on existing 460 768mb or 1gb, they have both on hand. Why wait then, wouldn't they release it yesterday?.

Well, he's probably full of **** since that would give Nvidia 90% (91 even) marketshare, not very likely!

And I didn't know there were 7-8 months of fall, the Evergreen cards were launched in September so two months from launch to better availability.

And please, could you stop with the ".40nm" thing? It's 40nm, .40nm is probably never ever ever going to happen, one Si-atom is .24nm...

They could be waiting for ATI to release their 6xxx series?

Another thing I find funny is AMD/Intel would snipe any of our Moms on a grocery run if it meant good quarterly results, and you are forever whining about what feser did?

Are you mixing up the 4870/4850 launch, late June 2008, with the late September
    launch of 5870/5850?

Should be 2 months, shouldn't it?

FWIW At the 2 biggest, here in Sweden, e-tailers that I usually look at, there was
really no supply of 5850 until Easter this year. 5870, especially XFX, were a little
    bit more visible.

I hope not, and don't think so, then we have to wait for a long time. Nobody knows when the ATi 6x-series will show up, or what kind of performance it has. It is more like PR on paper for now. AMD CEO's has been out with similar PR about 28nm and 6x-series right at GF100 release too, but none of them showed up.

I think it is meant to compete with 5970.

Here we go again. Would it be possible that you could find the quote there Mr. Meyer
say that they will be coming out with a 6K-series card at 28nm, and that the card
will be here before this point in time.

You are claiming that the card nor the process has showed up, but that AMDs CEO
said that they should be here by now.

As far as I know at the quarterly conference call in April that AMD had there was
information put out that AMD will refresh their graphics line before the years end.
No other information like process or marketing name was put forward.
Thats information to the shareholders, not really PR talk.

Im thinking instead of a dual card like the 5970 their new 6xxx series might be 1 solid GPU like the 480.. Would be pretty good..

The 6x-series would most probably follow the same line-up, something like 6770, 6750 and 6970, but the big question is when it will show up and what kind of performance it will have. If AMD can shrink it to 28nm then it would probably be a pretty good one with a new jump in performance, but that's a major challenge and it remains to be seen when they can get it out.

I don't think a 460x2 is meant to compete with 6x-series, but probably could if AMD can't shrink to 28nm and choose to release a "Frankenstein tweaked" 6x-series for this year or early next year.

That would be a suicide decision, because the card is probably will born dead...

key word here .... glofo nor tsmc cant make 28nm that fast ..... so that frankenstein approach is as good as it can get ....

My local retailer has a 10% discount on Gainward GTX 460 1GB which was cheap already before the sale. I'm wondering to hit on a couple of these, just because it is so cheap, or wait for a double-GPU. This got more tricky than i thought.

    No it's not.
It has been said before quite a few times, that's a special Asus card ( which might not make it to the shelves btw )

Vast majority of market share comes from people buying prebuilt desktops and laptops. People that buy discrete graphics cards are probably less than 1%

or for better ideas, you can probably use the futurmark or steam hardware surveys to see what the ratio of ATI to Nvidia discrete cards are.

just cause its 10:1 dosnt mean thats really the average, maybe they just had one card on sale and thats the one being cleaned out

Sorry for ressurecting buried thread, but something new is about GTX 490. We already have complete card design, manufactured, tested, packed! Launch time was planned around this weekend, but NVIDIA cancelled this card for ever!

So what now they will release GTX 495 with 2*GTX460 instead?

Maybe they canned it because of the ATi dual 6xxx threat.

im sure the 490 will be much better then 2x 460's, the 6xxx ATI cards are just around the corner, im thinking 465x2 or even the 470s using gf100 or gf104 chips..
