i see a few months back theyy were finding the 2.0 chips for $20-40 and now the cheapest ones i can find are $100 with the cheapest 1.66 chips being $46
edit: found some 1.66 chips for 25 each

beefed up cooling for the CPUs.. temps were still a lil too hi for my tastes.. I had a 120mm @7V of-centre, now I have a dead-on-centre 12V 140mm.. seriously, what are 'normal' temps for sossy cpus when they are crunching?
i also finally placed the case side on.. had it of before.. thats why my cpu temps went up & so I placed the 140mm there instead..

I'm using the fans from a couple of 1.7GHz Celerons (P4 vintage) that I modified to fit.

I'm using the genuine heatsinks which I lapped slightly to clean up some marks. No mirror finish malarkey, just a tidy up. For TIM I'm using Arctic Cooling Ceramique (blob in the centre application method). I'm also using an open cardboard box as a case so there's no heat collecting in there.

admittedly I have no fans shifting heat OUT.. I have 2x 120mm intakes, one @ front - intake for entire case - & one on side for GPU cooling.. I have one fan in the top section but the top section of my case side is cut open, so there is no 'suction' / 'flow thru' so-to-speak from the front fan to the rear![]()

If you're running passive or close to it then case ventilation is everything. Your case SOUNDS like it shouldn't have a hot air pocket in it, though.
Just looking at your temps again, one of your heatsinks might not be tensioned evenly.

Tiro , I have temps around 40°C with one 92mm fan covering half of the heatsinks
So something is definitely wrong, temps should never be that high

I use an IR Thermometer to pin point hot spots. There are cheap knock offs, but the accuracy can be off by like +-10*.
They do need SOME cooling, even if not much by modern standards. Consider how hot a 25w light bulb gets, (go grab one, it'll be fun! j/k you do that and you're on you're own) and then consider that these things consume about 31w each. A single 120mm fan comfortable does both, cost almost nothing to run and is all but silent.

I'm using two fans I salvaged from old P4 level chips (1.7GHz Celerons) I snagged at the land fill. A little tweaking and they attach to the genuine heatsinks no problem.

anyone got a RAID config running of the ICH5R with with either Vista or W7?
if so, where'd you get the drivers from?

Our local dump has a section where you can drop stuff off for other people to buy for a couple of bucks depending on what it is. A whole computer case, guts included, is about $6, $2 for a monitor etc. IT waste costs a lot to recycle (and they can get fined for just ploughing it into the ground) so the dump is happy to sell stuff rather than have to pay to get it taken away.
