I got this board three weeks ago and haven't really had the time to fool around with it due to my work. Now that I have some time to play around with this ... what would be a good starting point for my i7 965EE and 6GB Corsair DDR3 1600MHz memory? I have started out with stock settings except for a BCLK setting of 200 and a CPU multi of 21. Is there some tweaks I should be aware of? I haven't OC'ed an ASUS board in years and I want to get to know this board personally. A lot of settings that I am not familiar with. I could use a pointer or three!

I have a Noctua NH-D14 right now, though I will go with WC in a few weeks, depending on my time. The rest of what's on the system are two ATI HD4870 x2s in X-Fire, two WD Raptors150GB in RAID 0, and a DVD/CD unit. Not much else. A little help would be nice. Thanks in advance.

    AK

BTW: I have flashed to latest BIOS 0602. No problems in booting or whatever. This board seems to be an easy overclocker from my starting point ...

    hye handyman...

your rig is much similar with what i have....

at first, i've started to set the bclk to 150 and multiplier 'auto', which makes roughly 3.6GHz, it leaving the HT 'dis', C-state 'dis', speed-step 'dis' and turbo mode 'dis'..i didn't much set the memory timing at first and leave it all to auto..

i play with my CPU/VTT(QPI/DRAM)= +0.2 and IOH Voltage = +0.2..to test the stability, i run my prime95 for about 5 mins and sees how it goes, do monitor my temp since my cooler is on 'air'...5 mins prime95 was successful for me and i decided to higher by increasing my bclk by+10..each increment must come together with an increase in the CPU/VTT and IOH V..

the highest i can go for my i7 965 was 4.Ghz..because i'm quite scared it will burn my proc since my CPUV reaches 1.440 v-1.455v....

p/s: to others, can i just continue to go higher even though my CPUv reaches 1.440v, or i have to set the CPUv manually by lower it..

Hi, the TV tuner and the X-Fi is going to make the PCI Express to run at 8x (all of them).

This board does not have a NF200 chip included.

Thanks Zsamz I remember you as well. I always appreciated your advice

I had my QX9770 hooked up to an ASUS Rampage Formula X48 motherboard for some time and overclocked it back then. I had the i7 965 hooked up to a DFI UTX58-T3eH8 for well over a year. I liked the look of this board and decided that DFI no longer had what it once had. So I got this board and so far, I like everything I am seeing. I just need a little help in getting back into the overclocking mood. So if there is any advice you can give me in getting this bad boy up and running, I'd appreciate your expert opinion ...

dfi went downhill as soon as they dropped the support with x48
i woulda bought a dfi x58 if i thought they gonna have proper support but i guess the cutbacks bit them in the ass
    they coulda dominated the market
you might wanna boost the pci-e volts to 1.56v real and plug in the 4 pin 12v too since you got a 4870x2
    i got a 4870x2 with a wb but i'm playin with 5970

I have both 4-pin molex'es plugged in. Haven't upped any voltages just yet. My first big question is this: Should I use both eight-pin EATX power plugs? Right now I have them split ... one power cord with one 4-pin going to the first EATX12v-1 plug-in and the second 4-pin plug going to the second EATX12V_2 plug-in. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have a second power cord going to the EATX12V_2 plug, huh?

Any other thoughts before I start having some fun?

The weird thing is that my retail 980x lets me voltage the hell out of it but wont even boot up or let me go past 1.40v qpi / dram. But it will run vantage at 5.60ghz and 06 at 5.70ghz..
The ES chip has not limit and it will boot up at any voltage.. does'nt mean it's going to work though.. I tried my 4-way classy as well.. I think this chip is f'd up.. It cant even handle 4-way gtx 480 quad sli anymore
at a moderate 4.40ghz. I just get a black screen and a hummmmmmm from the pc. I decided to just order a bunch of retail 980x's until I find a good one.. Ordered from Tiger direct, Newegg and went to the local fry's to pick up
a few.. Hope I find a golden one guys! Cheers for all the help! I did find my special gtx 480 though.. It will do 950mhz with a low voltage of 1.10v - 1.12v Tested 5 gtx 480's total and none of them would run vantage
at 950mhz at 1.10 - 1.12v no matter what I did.. This peticular gpu however ran it without a single hitch or blink!

I was getting artifacts on my second monitor until I plugged in the 4 pin molex's to give the PCI-X some extra juice. 5970+5850.

Okay .. I have both EATX12V plug-ins plugged in. And both 4-pin Molex power plug-ins plugged in. And the PCI-E voltage is now upped to 1.56v. I was able to set the CPU ration to 21 and the BCLK is at 208.5 for 4.3GHz. Everything else is on AUTO.

What I need is for someone to post their full BIOS settings via the template so I can reference all the finer details about this BIOS that I am still a bit unfamiliar with. Preferably with an i7 965. Anyone?

    Thanks in advance.

i suggest you try for 4.4 @1.4v qpi 1.3v n works voltage down
dont go too high with you memory ? rev are they, if hynix you be limited
you got 24x multi so no need for high blk
i gotta make you earn your overclock a bit lol
i had the pleasure of a 950 for 10 min lol
    but now i'm stuk with a 920 and a 980x

What would be better out of the two options for RAM:

    2000MHz @ C9

    1600MHz @ C6

Just trying out a 4.2GHz and wondering which option would be better? I suppose I could also up the UCLK speed to 4GHz with the 1600MHz option...

Triple channel IMC controlled ram is hardly bandwidth starved. Lower latency achieved by tight timings is much better than high Mhz loose timings such as CL9

Got ya, well that's good news tbh, means I can ease off the volts on both the vtt and the DRAM.

no real world gains over 1600mhz x58 is bandwidth limited but tripple channels makes up for it
    myself i run 1720mhz cas6
even if i ran 2050mhz cas7-8 no real gains but its fun
p55 is different story it loves n needs bandwidth i run mine @ 2100 cas7
