Thank you for the heads up hipro sir !!!
wont be trying this with my 980x anytime soon at all ...
Just a shame that you had to loose 2 and kill one 1 more 980x just to find out.
Killing a cpu on the phone !!
    That was Epic
Thank you again for the heads up !!
you just saved or destroyed a lot of 980X's

I have been playing around 2cores w/o HT with E762, the system seems to be not quite stable, but I never try 1 core w/o HT.

The chips (A0) is still alive, no obvious degrading!

Question is which CPUs are vulnerable and is it connected to certain mainboards or BIOS/versions and the microcode update mentioned?
i7-980X retails obviously, but what about i7-980X (ES) and other (older) 32nm hexacores like Xeon (ES)?

As for my EVGA 760, it was bios Version IX58S664
and as for the GIGABYTE UD7, it was the f7h one.

One batch of the cpu was 3003b1xx and the other one was 3005F210
    I think that my friend's was also a 3003bsomething....

I didn't think there was anything wrong with using a single or only two cores w/o HT...surprising...

Unfortunate about your friends 3003B....I think 3003Bs are dying off the shelves and are being replaced with 3005Fxxx

    Go into cpu features
    Disable Hyper Threading.
Select 2 Cores for slow die
    OR
same with mine ...actually I have kill one my 980XE "F" when I want to run on 3D 05 only with 2 core

that sucks, losing a semi golden / golden chip. I am taking it super easy on my X5660, especially since it is an ES. It's weird that this is confirmed on multiple motherboards, oh well hopefully they take care of it (Intel) as it is obviously their problem.

Hm, weird issue. I've run 2c with and without HT tons of times and never had a dead chip.

Either a freakously weird coincidence, or a factor we don't know yet.

One es chip what I tested run three times bench @ ln2, almost always like dual core without ht, two days ago my friend told me this chip dont wanna overclock more, and now dont wanna post - rip.

Second also es run smth like 40 hours at dual core and is still good. First one and next is B1 step.

If 1C/1T benching can kill/degrade the chip, then I'm wondering if applications that use only one Core can have a similar effect even if you are running 6C/12T?

    EDIT:
I had seen this thread before, and got scared when Everest Memory Bench had 100% load on one Core while all other Cores were absolutely stuck to 0%.

Yeah, maybe many are dying slowly, you never know. Therefore it is important to know what's going on, and how those 1C/1T benches are killing/degrading the chips.

    EDIT:
There is not many applications that sets 100% load on only one core while others are at 0%. These kind of applications are rare and maybe that's why we haven't seen many dead chips yet. But those few out there may be killing the chips slowly, you never know.
We have to find out what's going on before speculating in this way, but it is a good idea to be aware of it and investigate it.
