    Seriously, read the whole thread.

The Sossaman is a low voltage Xeon dual core chip. While they are 32bit only, they are rock solid, reliable hardware use little power and are cheap to build a whole system with. There are specific parts that need to be used, but they're not expensive either. XS probably has the highest concentration of these things anywhere on WCG.

I wouldnt be surprised if XS has the largest 'enthusiast' following of sossaman in the world & outside of corporations, more sossy systems too

If you're planning on doing a group buy, I'm in. The shipping quote (canada) I get from EVERY site that has sossy motherboards is RIDICULOUS. It's 4x the price of the motherboard itself

Once some standoffs that I'm waiting on come in, I'll be able to get my second Sossaman system up and running. With the addition of a spare HD4850 and a SB Audigy2, I'm planning on repurposing my first Sossaman into a primary gaming/work system (that will crunch when not in use... which will be most of the time) and putting both SammyOne and SammyTwo into the same Stacker 832 case (there's a worklog title for 'ya: Two Sammys, One Case ). May as well sell my current gaming system while it's still worth something... anyone happen to need a very quiet ~62lb. black Antec P180 system with an EP45-DS3R mobo, two HD4850's, an E8400, 4GB of G-Skill 1066, a Corsair HX620 PSU, and what was probably $400+ worth of water cooling gear and fans?

@Petra, definitely a good idea to sell your current gaming system while its still wroth something. You can prob get 400-500 dollars for it.

Yes, that's all you need to mount the heatsinks. Watch out, though. Heatsinks aren't typical 771.

It just seems like the most sensible thing to do... I mean, with that spare HD4850 I pulled from the media PC and that sound card, the Sossaman system seems to do everything that I'd want it to and play everything that I'd usually play without issue. It really made me wonder why I'd want to hang onto this heat-belching, power-chugging system... sure, it is faster but I don't run at resolutions higher than 1280x1024 and the games I play aren't that rough on hardware.

I was going to make and post some schematics for those sinks before I assembled mine so anyone with a decent mill could get their own machines up, as well as be able to modify other sinks to fit (these are a little ... "different") ... but I forgot.

I bet you could use almost and bolt-thru heatsink that'll fit LGA 771 just fine. Those ABBHEATSINKS are just right, though. Low-profile and cheap. This chip doesn't need lots of cooling at all. Not worth it, though, when you're looking at shipping to Australia, that's for sure...

Keep an eye on ebay. And you know what, I think there might be some memory at work... maybe. Not sure. Will have to check, won't have a chance tomorrow but will check on Monday.

Now here's a guy that sees the potential I have been trying to explain for so long.
Yea, sammy is a nicecheap cruncher, yea it runs cool, yea, yeaand yea again BUT it also makes for one hell of an all round machine for daily use.
Kick in a decent vid card and wow, what a surprise and something else I found out: Drop in a fast drive like a raptor and OMG the increases you see.
Mine just crunches and runs WCG but I would have no issues using it as a daily driver at all.
In fact this summer I may do just that and be the only guy on the planet that owns a SR2 rig that uses a sammy for his daily machine..

It's not just the bolt spacing in this case.

There's a section that's proud of the rest of the surface. It's this elevated section (shown in my l33t schematic below ) that's "a bit different" and the main complication. The CPU die sits right in the middle of that raised section.

That step is about 3mm (just checked one of my yet-to-be-installed heatsinks).

    ghetto diagrams ftw!

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean, but a bolt-through solution won't need the step. For example, my Danger Den TDXs that I installed on Dave's Harpers have threaded rods running from the lian-li backplate, up through the mobo, and the heatsink. The heatsink is clamped down by nuts on the threaded rods and usually springs are used to distribute the pressure.

Should have been more clear on that... but if you find a heatsink that mounts like that (not necessarily a water block,) you're golden!

    Here's another interesting idea:

Get a cheapo 771 stock heatsink and either (1) layer thermal pads on the chip until it makes contact (like jcool's been doing with his 5970 ) or (2) get a 3mm thick copper square and either epoxy it onto the heatsink or use thermal paste b/w the heatsink and the square. I think it could work and you don't have to go out of your way to get the ABBs

As it happens I know a guy who's been a freelance/custom machinist for ... a hella long time. He's pretty much retired now but more than capable of milling the required step into an existing aluminium billet type heatsink. I had considered getting him to do some work for me, but not knowing the rest of the design parameters it was only going to end in frustration.
