I personally don't see the point of using a 42+" TV as a computer screen. That's just me. Pixel density isn't all that great and they seem a waste of space. However, for an HTPC, I'd be more apt to having your regular HDTV and a matching, yet smaller, LCD. That way, you can use it comfortably without having to be 8' away.

Here's a challenge; take a ruler and measure the height of your television screen. Then, take the height (in pixels) and divide it by that physical height. My 21.5" LCD is about 26.5cm tall and native resolution is 1920x1080; pixel pitch on this monitor is approximately 0.245mm; there's about 4 pixels per millimeter. I personally sit at a desk and my head is about 3' away from the LCD(s)'s. If you plan to be a distance from the screen, then yes using a TV is a very good idea. However, if you're close to it, what ends up counting is having a smaller screen with the same native resolution. As it is, if I want more screen space, I simply add another monitor. Which I've already done, by the way.
My setup looks something like this (I've since tossed the receiver and upgraded to a preamp & 160Wpc poweramp)...
The monitor on the left is 1680x1050, the monitor on the right is 1920x1080. The loudspeakers are Polk Audio Monitor 5 Series 2's; made around 1991-92.

You guys have obviously either lost your mind or not know much about LCD tvs. I for my PC have a 23 inch but I have hdmi cable ran to an LCD tv and I would have it right in front of me for games if my girlfriend wouldn't kill me.
The few times I have played games on it. Its been awesome. So I honestly love his setup
