Ya some of that didn't translate too good. But for the most of it did. Didn't look like they found a solution for the power supply.

I'm not quite sure, but I think socket F is a gimmick. Many heatsinks can fit it.

    • bolt thru s939 heatsinks
    • bolt thru s940 heatsinks
    • am2 / am2+ heatsinks

    A couple of quotes :

    1) Any Socket 939, 940, or AM2/AM2+ CPU heatsink/fan (HSF) should be physically compatible with Socket F (1207)
    2) If I purchased an (unused) HSF for a previous generation Opteron (e.g. Opteron 180, 146 etc), that should work as well, with the caveat that I need to ensure that the thermal power dissipation for the other Opteron chip was greater than the 75W thermal envelope for the Opteron 2350 quadcore (75W) that I am looking to buy.
    3) When asked if various Athlon 64 or Athlon 64 X2 CPU HSFs would work, the tech emphasized that the OEM Opteron HSFs use a copper core with copper heatpipes. He seemed to think that the copper core *and* the heatpipes were important, esp. for 24x7 operation.

With that in mind, I found some brand new, unused Opteron 180 HSFs (socket 939) on eBay and purchased them.

Btw, I just bought this on ebay :

And THIS is my little plan :

Uhh... that was an awful lot of searching/work to do when you could have just looked up the hole spacing in AMD Socket F whitepapers... Anyway, yeah, the 2-hole mount for socket F is identical to the old socket 754/939/940 2-hole mount (but, obviously, not the same as AM2... AM2 coolers will only work if you have one of the socket 754/939/940 retention mechanisms in place).

*edit* ...and I know because I've been asked probably ten or fifteen times since the launch of Socket F. Anyway, I might be down for one of those setups... maybe. Certainly a screwy form factor with odd power hookups, though. I wonder if it would play nice with Ubuntu...

What makes this one so special? Why don't we get one that doesn't require a funky power supply?

I wish I could get it before all of you so i can test it and see what are our options. We def need a test system!

edt : it does NOT require a funky power supply. a regular one with good connectivity should do

From what I've read, you just plug 8 pins and 6 pins in a certain configuration and it works!

thinking about it, it does sound weird but yea the only adapter you'd use would be for the 24 pin on your PSU. You only need to short 2 pins on the 24-pin
