Dual Opteron: Socket F coolers, power considerations, 8*** compatibility HELP PLEASE!

    Hi,

I'm putting together a 2-way socket F opteron system. I already have a tyan thunder n6650W and opteron 8124 on the way. This is my first server so some quick questions:

    1) What options do I have in terms of air coolers? Do socket 939 coolers work since they too have 2 motherboard holes (unlike AM2 which has 4)?

    2) The tyan manual states that opteron 2*** are compatible, but since the only difference with the 8*** series is the extra HT link (IIRC), there should be no problem, correct?

    3) Will a PSU like the 700W thermaltake toughpower do? I won't be excessively overclocking or adding too many HDs- my GPU will be low-power.

Thanks in advance folks, all WCGers please help as I'll be running this 24/7 on bionic!

socket 939 heatsinks with bolt through work. Meaning heatsinks like the noctua u12, thermalright ultra 120, ultra 120 extreme, tuniq tower, big typhoon etc. Basically any bolt through 939 heatsink will work with socket F.

Every 939 cooler will do the job.
I have Tyan S2927&Opteron 2210 and stock 939 coolers works just fine!

    Hi,

Could someone please confirm that 8*** processors definately don't work in a 2-way board?

    Thanks.

Yes, the 8xxx work in 2xxx configurations, that is true both for socket 940 and F.

    Thanks,

It seems I have a problem then! I'm just building a 2-way system, its a Tyan Thunder n6650W with an opteron 8216, new PSU and RAM. Yes RAM is ECC DDR2 and PSU has EPS connectors. When I boot up I don't get any video (tried card in both the PCI-E 16x slots). CPU fan spins but thats about it. Mobo doesn't have any LEDs or internal speaker connector so I'm clueless wether:

    a) The CPU is shod (got it 2nd hand off ebay)
    b) The mobo is shod (got it off ebay too, but with DOA policy)

    Any ideas?

Since it work now you have it but for the benefit of other readers: you don't only need ECC RAM, you need registered. There is ECC unregistered which will not work here.
